The Hawkeye Poll

Iowa? That’s Radar, not Hawkeye.

Nathaniel Bumppo—from a whole series of novels by Cooper, of which The Last of the Mohicans is one.

Iowa first, then MASH

The MASH character

then the last of the mohicans character (because the MASH chracter is named after him)

Airplane?

I googled it and there is an obscure military plane called the Hawkeye. But are many of you that are saying that one of the first things that comes to mind in reference to “Hawkeye” is an airplane, happen to have served on that obscure type of plane or are you confusing it with Hawker / Beechcraft?

In order, Iowa, MASH, Last of the Mohicans.

But I’m from Wisconsin, so I heard a lot of Big 10 sports.

E-2 Hawkeye. Not really obscure, just the Navy version of the airborne early warning craft. The Air Force version, which more people are familiar with, is the E-3 Sentry, also known as AWAC. I worked with Navy pilots who flew the E-2, so that’s why it comes to me quickly.

There was a time when I’d have answered with the AVenger, the MASH doctor, or the James Fenimore Cooper hero.

But today? “Hawkeye” is an actual bird.

My son loves to spot animals, especially birds, while we’re out driving. And there are frequently red-tailed hawks sitting on top of lamp posts all over the Austin area. There’s one particular hawk who’s almost always on a particular lamp on MoPac near 35th street. My son named that bird “Hawkeye.” So, that bird is the first guy I think of.

Someone with keen eyesight, then MASH or Iowa, then the comic book character.

Someone with keen eyesight, a hawks actual eye, and then the MAsh character.

In spite of how much of a fan of The Avengers as I am, when I saw the thread title, my first thought was of Benjamin Franklin Pierce.

E-2 Hawkeye AWACS.

A person with keen eyesight, then MASH.

Cooper, Avengers, (which are both “good aim”), then MASH.

The only three things I can think of off the top of my head are the MAS*H character, the Last of the Mohicans character, and the tennis “electronic line judge” device.

Iowa first, then MAS*H. But I’ve lived in Iowa for 20 years now. Before I moved here they were reversed.

Just the term without any context around it.

MASH, then someone with high visual accuity.

I might eventually recall the Avengers character.

I voted for Iowa but I’m a Big Ten sports fan so naturally that is the first thing I would think of. The MASH character would be second.

Around here it’s always meant “one with superior vision, seemingly comparable to that possessed by the bird of prey herein referenced”. It’s just easier to say “hawkeye”.
