MASH, Iowa, Avengers, person with keen sight.
MASH. The others don’t even come to mind.
Avengers.
When I hear “Hawkeye,” I think of Natty Bumpo and I picture Daniel Day Lewis.
I wish the poll was multiple choice… but the 4077th surgeon came to mind first.
You forgot the Hawk-Eye camera, which was my second thought after CPT Pierce.
That’s Ohio, as represented by this creepy fellow. But you can be forgiven as everybody from the 48 other states and the rest of the world confuse the two. The difference is that Ohioans don’t have 47 words for “corn.”
Is the Iowa reference just towards the UI team, or is there a state-wide term that came first?
If I were talking about a sharp-eyed person, I’d say they were “eagle eyes.”
First thing that comes to mind is the Hawkeye system of ball-tracking for various sports.
Had you asked this 10 years ago I’d have said the M.A.S.H. character.
(the ball-tracking system is also at the top of my google search result when I simply use the term “Hawkeye”)
What is the Iowa connection? I didn’t get that.
Answered MASH.
I thought Iowa first, then Alan Alda’s character. I think being in Big Ten country for so long has a lot to do with it.
MASH here, too.
The Hawkeyes are some kind of sports team in Iowa.
Iowa is nicknamed the Hawkeye State. The University of Iowa adopted the nickname for their athletic department later.
quite a few camera models.
MAS*H
Iowa, no doubt. When I looked at the choices I said “oh, yeah, that’d work too” about a couple of others.
Sometimes I would think of Clint Barton, sometimes I would think of Benjamin Franklin Pierce. Probably a 50-50 chance of either.
First Nathaniel Bumppo, then MAS*H. Then back to the theme music for LOTM. None of the others even approach thought, but then I’m usually mesmerized by the Dougie MacLean tune
Iowa’s nickname is the “Hawkeye State,” so by default, everyone from Iowa is a Hawkeye, including Radar O’Reiley. ![]()
It’s believed to have been coined by James G. Edwards, a Burlington newspaper publisher in honor of his friend, Chief Black Hawk, a leader of the native Sauk tribe. Of course the University of Iowa’s sports teams are called the Hawkeyes after the state nickname.
Before submitting, I thought my choice, “A device used to track balls in sporting events” would be, if not first, a close 2nd behind Hawkeye Pierce. At the moment it’s at 1.32%
The Avengers?! Well, there was John Steed, and Emma Peel, and Tara King after Diana Rigg left the show…don’t remember anyone named Hawkeye though.
Yeah, I know…
