New expansion today.

Anyone still… hearthstoning?

MTGA killed it for me. Just don’t have time for an inferior F2P card game.

I spent all of my gold and got the Warrior Rush Legendary, and the Warlock discard legendary.

I have to say though, I’m a bit over Hearthstone. I started playing Brawlhalla (a smash-alike) and it feels reallly good to be playing fighting games again. No dealing with bullshit card draw RNG, rock paper scissors meta, when you lose you know why you lost and where you got outplayed, not out drew or just had a bad roll of the dice.

Honestly, card games to me feel like an exercise in statistics to play, and an individual game is less important than the whole aggregate of games. Which is fine as a game - after all, poker, but I only get to play a few games a day if that, and I just can’t deal with variance any more.

I opened 45 packs yesterday and got 4 legendaries including the free one but I got the priest and the thief loa and I’m not good enough at deck building to make anything with them. I’m debating building the hunter loa since it’s pretty much all I’m missing to make the prebuilt hunter loa deck. I don’t have a ton of dust right now so I’m holding off until I get an idea of what will be good this expansion since I really only get to build 1 good deck per expansion since I’m too cheap to spend actual money.

I also didn’t get many overkill cards that was the one metric I was interested in playing with so right now I’m still rocking my death rattle hunter and picking off the new weak decks.

The Hunter Loa looks bad. I found Kripp pretty persuasive on that count - if you’re playing a 3/2 with no immediate board impact on turn 5 as Hunter, you’re not going to win that game.

I did fairly well on legendaries on the packs I opened - both Warlock legendaries, the Warrior, Hunter, Druid and Paladin loas, Princess Talanji and Captain Hooktusk.

Most of what I got I’m not that excited about - Jeklik looks useful, Akali maybe; the rest seem meh. Really wanted Voone to build a dragon warrior deck. Of course Oondasta would have been nice.

Holding off on deciding what to craft till I get a better feel of what’s good.

I ended up crafting the deck and its been pretty good. I got 6 wins in the current brawl with it and I’m winning at about 60% going from 15 to 20. The hunter is certainly better then the priest or rouge that I have though the spirit of the lynx is really what makes the deck work since then you’re summoning a 4/3 which isn’t as bad and all of the rush minions on the next turn so far have been 2/2s for 1 mana.

As long as Shudderwock is a thing I’ll be playing Hearthstone.

Saw a new OTK today.

Apparently Gonkh has an interaction (currently unclear if intentional or not) where if you have multiples of him on the board, his effect triggers several times… letting you swing over and over again. So if you have two Gonks on the field, 5 attack with you hero, and kill 4 enemy minions, you get 4 “extra” swings with your face.

It's a little silly.

I got a Gonk as one of my legendaries and it turned out that I already had all the cards for the combo deck (aside from floop, and I could put in another clone spell in his place); worked my way from rank 13 down to the bottom of rank 15 with the deck but it was kind of fun. It does use like 20 or 25 of the same cards as every other Druid combo deck, of course.

In this tavern brawl you play decks for each class featuring the new cards. I’m actually having a lot of fun playing disco warlock, but man, it has to be more expensive and specialized than even wallet warrior. So many legendaries.

Yeah, I want to build that deck - but I need to craft I think three legendaries and an epic. That would be 75% of my dust.

I love the priest deck but I’d need to craft two legendaries and two epics for it, none of which seems optional, and none of which seems super likely to be useful anywhere else.

Here’s something I hate about the yearly rotation. There are a couple of decks I’m interested in trying - disco warlock, spell paladin - but I know we’re on the final expansion of the year. Or I think so - it rotates in April, right?

So if you want to make decks from the last expansion of the year, you know the cards you make are only good for a few months. Do I really want to spend a shitload of dust on a disco warlock deck for the shortest interval it will be available?

There are other considerations, but it makes me think they’d be better off rotating away one expansion at a time as they add a new one.

Wait, is it that the last 2 years of expansions are in the rotation? I was looking up info about the rotation, and it suggests that the 2017 sets will rotate at the end of the year, not the 2018 ones. I should probably know this. How does it work?

It seems like it’s based on the Magic: The Gathering block system. But the block system makes sense, because the sets in blocks are typically bound together by flavor and mechanics, and the first block in the set is usually the heavier one. For example, rotating out Champions of Kamigawa, Betrayers of Kamigawa, and Saviors of Kamigawa one at a time in order is nonsensical, because the block as a whole builds off itself (and Champions is considerably larger than the other two and contains many key cards*). It’s much cleaner to rotate the whole thing out, rather than have half a block hanging off of standard in each direction.

Meanwhile, in Hearthstone, this isn’t a thing. Boomsday didn’t build off Witchwood in any reasonable sense; Rastakahn’s Rumble didn’t build off either of them (other than behind the scenes in design space, perhaps). The sets are the same size, they’re basically disconnected from each other… Removing them 3 at a time is kinda silly, taking all the downsides of the block system without any of the reason for doing it to begin with.

*Not that Kamigawa Block was known for its large number of high-power-level cards… :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s the last two years. Rastakhan will be in standard for a year plus a few months. Rastakhan, Witchwood and Boomsday will rotate out together, probably in April 2020. In April of 2019, Un’goro, Knights of the Frozen Throne and Kobolds rotate out. Goodbye Saronite Chain Gang and Fungalmancer…
