The Hearthstone Thread

OK this latest Tavern Brawl is weird and completely random. First couple of times I played I got nothing that worked well together and lost. Then won to someone who conceded after I played Zombie Chow on turn 1.
Last game I played a Warlock and had three Mal’Ganises (Mal’Ganii?). Didn’t get a chance to put all three out unfortunately, as my opponent conceded when I had Mal’Ganis and a Dread Infernal out.

Yeah, it’s pretty silly this week but is a lot of fun. I like that they’ve ramped up the legendaries.

Three times recently I’ve had an arena run as a mage and got to have pyroblast as part of my deck. In every run, I won 1 or 2 games I otherwise wouldn’t have won because of that card. It comes into play a lot more frequently than I would’ve anticipated. I just won the worst of them - I had 17 hp and an empty board against his 4 medium-strength units with enough to kill me next turn. He was at 10 hp. I top-decked a pyroblast out of 16 cards left. Must’ve sucked for him.

I don’t know what mage decks it would be viable in, since anything with Antonidus wouldn’t really work with it.

I’m pretty fed up that 7 months after the release of GvG, we still only have the option to get GvG decks from arena. That’s just stupid now. We’ve had more time with the limited GvG set than the much more broad and numerous classic packs. Just really fucking dumb. I have almost all the cards I want from GvG, so what, I can’t play arena anymore?

Pyroblast is a common sub for Antonidas in Freeze Mage, currently Antonidas is in vogue due to all the healing, but Pyroblast represents a bigger burst (and more burst with Thaurissan discounting it, Pyro + Frost bolt + Ice lance combos can get reallly out of hand.

It was also played in Mech Mage, also as an alternative to Antonidas, but I think in that deck Antonidas is clearly better due to cloakfield/spare part synergy.

Ragnaros is the card I’ve been lusting after since I started playing, and here I am sitting at 1600 dust again, and I can’t quite pull the trigger. I feel like I have some fun mage decks I could use, but I really need Antonidus as a finisher. But Rag is useful for more decks. I guess if I dusted my golden Alex, I could have both. And I probably won’t be using Alex much - I’m nowhere near having a good warrior deck. Trying frost mage would probably be all. Gold Alex does have a cool effect though. I feel like between Jaraxxus and Alex I have two of the best golden cards.

Yeahhhh… I dunno. Rag is neutral, so I would rather have Rag than Antonidas. Rag goes in almost any deck that hits turn 8, Antonidas doesn’t even fit in some Mage decks. And Rag is just FANCY.

If you’re F2P, though, Rag enables a more controlly style of play across all your decks, for example, can’t go wrong with Rag in Priest, Ramp druid, Control Warrior, Grinder Mage (kinda, I run him in my Majordomo deck), control Rogue (Trump did try to make it work, 3 Rags with gang up woot), not really pally, shaman, hunter. So that’s 6 classes that can run Rag, as opposed to basically 2 decks that run Antonidas, one of which there is an Epic replacement (Freeze).

I would totally pull the trigger on Rag if you want to F2P, it adds a LOT to control priest.

If you’re talking pure winrate, though, Sylv I think is a bit better, and learning how to play Sylv really helps you think about your game a lot more than Yolo Rag.

I am also jealous of your golden legendary luck, I only ever managed to get Gold Themaplugg (ugh). Dusted him for… Rag. =D

I did craft Sylv last time I asked this question on Sylv vs Rag.

My legendaries are:

Cenarius
Vol’Jin
Prophet Velen
Lord Jaraxxus
Mal’Gannis
Leeroy Jenkins
Gazlowe
Sylvanas Windrunner
Dr. Boom
Troggzor the Earthinator
(Golden) Alexstrasa

I should probably play priest more. I’ve mostly played warlock with my mid-range voidcaller demon deck. About to turn gold on that hero. I play mage second most, I like the whackiness of unstable portal mostly.

I may craft Rag and then turn Golden Alex into Antonidus. I’m not sure yet. Are control warrior and freeze mage the only decks Alex fits into?

I know I should probably dust some of those, like Gazlow and maybe Cenarius since I never play druid, although I guess with Rag maybe I could try druid. I just feel bad dusting legendaries. The only one I’ve dusted so far was a golden Greenskin because he’s a pretty worthless legendary and I crafted him into Dr. Boom. Well, and the second Dr. Boom I got in a deck after that. I feel bad only getting 400 dust from a regular legendary.

Well, Alex fits into any deck that wants to set up a stall/combo kill as a win condition, so things like combo priest can use her. Dragon decks to a certain extent can also use her as an emergency heal, but outside of dragon decks healbots are probably favored these days. I also run Alex in my majordomo deck for the 15 hp rag hero, but that’s kinda niche.

Anyway, sylv into boom into rag is like the neutral control set, goes perfectly into priest. With voljin, you have the cards to play a top of the line control priest, I feel. The only other neutral legendary is Ysera, but she is kind of replaceable by nefarian. Also, she is the slowest of the control legendaries, so it takes a special kind of meta to use her. Will mess priests up good though.

Also, don’t dust cenarius!! He’s good for combo Druid, ramp Druid, basically top tier. I wish I had cenarius. I would dust troggzor before cenarius. Just don’t do it, you don’t need cards that badly, and one of these days you’ll want to play ramp or combo Druid or something and wish you had cenarius.

Edit: I’d also dust Gazlowe before either of them

There was a site that would let you enter a few cards you had, and then find decks that match it. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? I’m trying to find it.

If I give control priest a try, can you recommend a deck given the legendaries I have available? I can craft blues and purples if need be.

Hearthpwn.com is probably the site you are thinking of.

These days Control Priest is nearly at the bottom of the ladder, followed only by the gimmicky Dragon Paladin and Trap Hunter decks.

Tempo Storm’s Meta Snapshot #21

If you want to play a strong deck it looks like you might have the makings for a good Demonlock or a Midrange Druid. Face Hunter is also still doing well for fast climbing even in the high Legend ranks if you want to give Leeroy a workout.

Crafted rag with my dust. Now I’m mostly deciding if I want to dust golden alex and craft her into antonidus or another legend.

The enemy had a mad scientist on their board. I dropped a goblin blast mage, and the mad scientist got hit twice with the 4 random damage. Which triggered the secret, a mirror image. Which then copied the goblin blast mage i summoned. That seems like a weird sequence in which to process the events.

Yes, it is. If you’d like to see an even worse example of Hearthstone’s screwy ordering, have a look at Hearth Funny’s latest video.

1. Jaraxxus enters play.
2. Knife Juggler’s “after you summon a minion” ability triggers, killing opponent’s Sylvanas.
3. Sylvanas’s Deathrattle triggers, stealing Jaraxxus.
4. Jaraxxus’s Battlecry triggers, replacing the opponent’s hero.
5. Opponent’s Repentance triggers, reducing Jaraxxus’s health to 1.
6. Opponent’s Snipe triggers, dealing 4 damage to Jaraxxus.
7. Opponent dies.

The new expansion has been officially announced.

Looks like a lot of stuff this time around will focus on hero powers. The “inspire” mechanic introduces card abilities that trigger whenever you use your hero power, and there are cards to reduce the cost of your hero power and even one that lets you use it as many times per turn as you want.

I’ve said before that the way Blizzard handled the new Hero icons was a massive missed opportunity, but this makes it even worse. These new heroes could have had new hero powers just in time for an expansion about hero powers but then Blizzard couldn’t get away with making it a real money only purchase.

Also: The new Tavern Brawl is the worst one yet. I actually have a 2-2 record on it, but the losses have been completely unenjoyable pay2win bullshit.

Hah. Was going to say that the brawl was fun because I get to play with all those uncastable/unplayable high-cost legends that have been sitting in my binder.

yes it is fun! you get to try the things you really couldn’t before in your card collection.

… and we have new hero powers! The Grand Tournament - Hero Powers - Hearthstone

Yeah, I think I agree with this, even though I’ve spent a fair amount myself (I’d guess I’m missing around 20 of the legendaries). Mildly fun putting together a priest dragon deck and getting to use Malygos and Nefarian for once; but I often play the Tavern Brawl with a 14 year old relative who hasn’t spent much of anything and probably has just a couple of legendaries, so that approach isn’t much fun there.

Thankfully it’s just for a week so it’s not a big deal.

Wish they would do some Tavern Brawl with deck building constraints - limit the deck to one legendary for example. That would be a more interesting exercise. No idea if the software supports that, however.

Having an argent tournament themed expansion without putting in a proper tournament mode is really dumb. Automatic tournaments are such an obvious thing to do for a game like this.

I mean, they did that sort of thing back in 2001 with Warcraft 3. Just run a tournament on the hour, maybe with some sort of restriction/twist on the idea. Let people sign up by a power of 2, maybe the first 1024 or 2048 players, and then just run an automated bracketed tournamnet. How fun would that be? And no hassle for them to run, it could be completely automated. But it would instantly become the most fun way to play the game.

I’ve finally got around to doing the last wing of Naxxramas, and the Paladin class challenge is still complete and utter shit. Class challenges should be like the Hunter class challenge: a showcase of the new card you’re unlocking. Instead, this one is a mediocre weenie deck against a deck that is seemingly designed specifically to shit on weenie decks with mass removal, more removal and a bunch of big taunts. Even if the AI didn’t cheat its ass off in three different ways, you’d still get your ass kicked nine times out of ten. It doesn’t show you how awesome Avenge is, it makes you hope that whoever filled your deck with Echoing Oozes lost their job over it.
