A lot of people seem pretty worked up at the prospect of a Hillary Clinton presidency. The GOP has been trying to smear her for decades, apparently because they think she is the biggest threat around.
I’m not going to say Hillary is beyond reproach, but: what are people so afraid of? Some of it is surely irrational, like Chuck Norris’ claim that an Obama victory would bring about 1000 years of darkness. If you can find nutter quotes like that about Hillary and cite them, let’s bring those in here and take a look. Of course I also want to include well-reasoned critiques from talking heads about Clinton’s abilities and intentions. If you have a personal dark prediction or fear about a Clinton presidency, feel free to share those, too.
I want to take a look at a Hillary Clinton worst-case-scenario. Crazy or not, the only restriction here is that somebody seems to actually believe it (or someone has enough clout to make it up and put it out there through the mass media). Let’s paint a picture of the Hillary Clinton Presidency of Doom.
This isn’t my opinion, but I could see doomsayers piling up all the negative things people have been saying: She won’t be able to get any traction with a Republican congress, Benghazi will come back to bite her in the ass, she’ll get indicted by the email thing or have to drag the albatross around with her for her entire term, she’s not qualified to be President, she’s a big liar, and in general might well suck as President. Chances are, some few of these might turn out to be true, but the doomsayers entire reason for existence is to say WHAT IF ALL of these things are true!!!?
I see basically a third Obama term, with the exception of a substantial risk of increased foreign military intervention in the Middle East and perhaps elsewhere.
She’s apparently hypocritical in claiming to be a feminist, because she said mean things about the woman who her husband cheated on her with.
Donald Trump says she’s “evil” because she used a private email server. Also, she once took a bathroom break during a debate. Also, her husband cheated on her. Did you know that?
This one comes closest to raising issues that would be significant if they weren’t, you know, made up. Apparently she is secretly working for the Russian mafia AND the radical Islamists.
Conclusion: these people are just plain nuts and have appointed Hillary to project their paranoid delusions onto. There’s no point in trying to rationally determine what they’re specifically afraid of, any more than in trying to figure out exactly how many teeth the monster under a three-year-old’s bed has.
My biggest fear is that she seems to have not learnt any of the lessons from Iraq / Libya and will continue to start wars that just create power vacuums and make the world a more dangerous place. Putin is undeniably smarter than her when to comes to Global Geopolitics. Russia will keep benefiting from US mistakes, just like they’ve been for the last 15 years.
I don’t think Trump will be wiser, however. Putin seems to be REALLY excited about Trump. And its not because he spends his time shouting USA! USA! during the Olympics.
Trump is against interfering in the middle east, he has basically said he thinks the US should withdraw and leave the region alone and let them sort their own problems out. This might actually be the smartest thing to do, its hard to argue that US interventions in Iraq or Libya actually achieved anything.
Curiously enough, googling “crazy things said about Hillary Clinton” yields no results (at least on the first page) but (purportedly) crazy things said by Hillary Clinton. Try it, you will see, and you will despair.
Hillary can’t be that bad. Apparently many of the Republicans are abandoning the convention due to Trump. When we see the Democratic establishment abandoning Hillary, then start to worry.
Oh please, that’s amateur hour in terms of doom and gloom predictions. I remember a segment from The Colbert Report from about eight years ago. It started with a clip of Glenn Beck’s War Room, talking about the potential effects of Obama’s presidency; banks nationalized, unemployment between 12% and 20%, Dow Jones average at 2,800, real estate market collapsed.None of which happened.Compared to that, Benghazi is small potatoes. Colbert took the show apart like only he could.
Electing Hillary Clinton will essentially be a continuation of the current apocalypse. If you believe that the United States has been destroyed for the last eight years then, yes, that ongoing destruction is going to continue.
If, on the other hand, you look around and notice the country is still here and seems to be doing okay, then you can see the United States is surviving a Democratic presidency and will survive another one. So if you’re a conservative Republican, take heart; this is as bad as things get.
Obama even took credit for the apocalypse in a April 2015 speech:
Michele Bachmann predicted I would bring about the biblical end of days. Now that’s a legacy! That’s big. I mean, Lincoln, Washington — they didn’t do that.
It seems to me that most of the opposition to Hillary is not fact-based. There are a ton of people who think the next Benghazi investigation will prove her guilt when the first dozen and a grueling cross-examination failed to do so. It’s became a sing-song slogan: Hillary lied, people died, Benghazi! Or they’re sure the FBI will indict her any day now. Or she’s unqualified because her husband sorta cheated on her. Truth is, she’ll just be a boring conventional leader who will muddle through for 4-8 years. She’ll make some Supreme Court appointments that will reverse the steady rightward trend of the Bush years. The economy will continue its slow recovery, if anything happens at 3 am she’ll take the call and handle it. She will not be a charismatic leader but she will play the cards she’s been dealt well. She will not suffer under the illusion that she’s a post-partisan president or that Republicans have any sense of decency.
Saying that she would make a bad President because she would get no cooperation with a Republican Congress or because any of their smear campaigns might be successful is like saying “That would be a horrible car to buy…because if you purchase it we will pour sugar in the gas tank and shoot out the tires.”
