THE Hockey Thread.

snicker, guffaw, chortle and splort.

Feynn, my poor deluded friend, you’re reaching, because I saw the game as further proof that the Habs are coming undone. Sure, Theo’s back, but he can’t score goals even a little. The Leafs own Colorado, and you guys were lucky to walk away with a tie.

Montreal will sink so low that they’ll be able to walk under a snake’s belly wearing stilts and a top hat.

Say, how about them Leafs? The Caps game was a walk in the park.

Who do you like for the San Jose-Dallas game?

Slip

I am fully aware that Theodore can’t score goals, that’s the job for the rest of the team. But it’s easier to score goals when you’re not forced to think about the guy in net who can’t stop shit (Garon) and just play good aggressive hockey.

I am going to have to go with San Jose over Dallas, they’re on a roll and I like that scrappy little team to boot. They bitch slapped the Blues last night and Nabakov hasn’t been beaten since October 25th. Perhaps his study with Tretiak this past summer has something to do with his success. I have to go with the Sharks to beat those geriatrics known as the Stars.

I am thinking the Flames will dining on some roast Duck tonight. I plan on watching this one on SNet as I continue to recuperate from the flu.

And yes, I know that Toronto beat the Caps. Had it not been for another godlike effort on the part of Joseph it could have easily swung the other way. Toronto is much like Edmonton in that both are blessed with outstanding goalies and both teams can often rely on that fact way too much.

Salo let one in 59 seconds into OT last night after not giving up a goal in regulation for two consecutive games, the guy is incredible but that only goes so far.

Kudos to the Bruins for only allowing the Oilers 20 shots on goal last night, that is something that is rarely done.

After somebody scores a goal in Phoenix, they quick shine a spotlight on them.

This just makes me nostalgic. Reminds me of the old days of watching games on TV, when it was more common. (Back when my beloved Red Wings didn’t make the playoffs for a decade or so, when everybody made the playoffs.)

I vaguely recall at least one other team that still does this after goals. Washington?

Well Slip, we were both wrong and I was wrong twice. Dallas and San Jose played to a 2-2 tie while the Ducks and Flames played to a 3-3 tie.

Iginla potted two more goals to stay on top of the league in scoring while Kariya scored his 4th goal in three games. It would seem that those new sticks did nothing for Kariya as since switching back to his old stick he has been on a rampage. I love watching the guy play, it’s just too bad he plays for the Ducks and not… lets say… Montreal.
Wouldn’t that be sweet?

So I have a plan. I’m going to start rooting for Toronto… not because I’ve seen the light and actually like those godless bastards but because then they will surely get their asses kicked.

Just so you know… I’m already cursing Montreal for blowing what was a great start to the season.

Habs fans don’t take losses lightly.

Place: Calgary

Opposition: Hawks

Result: jarbaby crying and cursing.

My condolences in advance.

Wump - Those are really HUGE balls you have there.

I’m picking Chicago just to stay on Jarbaby’s good side.

Habs win!!!

Islanders get reamed by the Rangers by a score of 6-2.

Iginla has scored two more goals for Calgary as they face L.A. tonight. That’s four in two nights and there’s a third period to be played yet.

Wasn’t Calgary the team that was supposed to finish dead last this year?

The size of my testicles has very little, if anything, to do with the curent level of play of the Calgary flames.
But thanks for noticing, i’ll try not to flaunt them too much this season

I seriously don’t know what’s pleasing me more. The Wings winning? or the Avs losing.

Patrick Roy has been sitting on 199 wins for nearly 8 games now. They have been winnless in their last what… 6? 7 games? Huzzah.

I just hope he doesn’t go home and take his frustrations out on his wife again the fuqing bastard.

On another note: Richter did VERY well the other night. Now I only feel like the American Olympic team is going to get smacked instead of spanked out of the medal rounds.

Wump- You’re right, the size of your testicles has nothing to do with how well those Cowtowners are playing. I am impressed as the next guy with Calgary’s success and am looking forward to a season where the Oilers and Flames are both contenders. It’s like the good old days of the 80’s.

What is more impressive than a couple of small market teams with relatively low player budgets playing as well as they are? Iginla, Carter, and Smyth don’t make 7+ million a season yet these guys are among the points leaders in the NHL and their respective teams are winning. Chicago may come out of Alberta a trifle battered and bruised as they make their current road trip.

I have to see when Edmonton and Calgary face off next, it will as always be one hell of a scrap. Til then, let’s make our offerings to the hockey gods so that the Blah Hawks come out of Alberta battered and bruised losers.

You see, I have enormous balls too so have no problem picking on jarbabyj’s beloved Blackhawks.

Calgary won yet again last night!
3-2 over the supposed “Kings”.

They won’t be playing the oilers for awhile unfortunatly. Dec 26 in Edmonton, then Dec 31 at Home. I’ll hopefully be at that game crossing fingers It feels really strange being worried about whether or not i’ll be able to get tickets.

The gods have already decided, Flames and Oilers will win. I guess jarbaby hasn’t been paying up. The gods are angry at being made to look like chumps helping the hawks to win, and having nothing to show for it.

Looks like my Leafs are a stay at home club. We just can’t win on the road. New Jersey fixed our wagon. Actually, Elias fixed our wagon. In overtime, but we were outgunned all the way.

Note to Pat Quinn: Stop protecting leads, you moron. In fact, stop looking up at the scoreboard altogether and just fucking play the game. Dickhead.

Rematch tonight. At home. Take the night off, Quinn. We need this game.

We need a coach. Anybody available?

Firstly let me start by saying that there is nothing worse than a Habs fan. They are a sorry hold over from days gone by when the only game you could watch was on HNIC and it usually involved the Habs or the Leafs. BORING.

Second… Paul Coffey ? Isn’t funny how he didn’t relly do SHIT once Gretzky & Messier were gone? Sure he put up some impressive numbers and had some OK seasons post Edmonton but he really overstayed his welcome in the NHL. I am sure that Edmonton will eventually retire his number. He did do dome impressive stuff there. He was a defencemen that was lucky to play with some genuine superstars. Gretzky, Messier, Kurri et al in Edmonton, Yzerman & Federov in Detroit, Mario and Jaromir in Pittsburg would he have as many points as he does if he played on an average team ??

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/7/77/

Ray Bourque… now theres a defenceman. Consistant. Averaged about 50 pts a season and always had a good +/-

Edmonton can retire Coffey’s number but the NHL should retire Bourque’s

I don’t see anything wrong for being a lifelong fan of the greatest hockey team ever. Whether they’re winning or losing they are MY Habs. I have to tip my hat to Slip just for being a Leaf’s fan, the second greatest team ever?

Coffey is one of the highest scoring defenceman in NHL history with 396 goals and 1131 assists. He had five 100 point seasons in his career, three with Edmonton and two with Pittsburgh. His career points are 1527 which averages out to 72 points a season lifetime. Bourque’s average is 71.

He also did impressive “stuff” in Pittsburgh averaging 88 points a season and with Detroit averaging nearly 60 points a season. (He averaged 81 points a season with Edmonton)

Coffey was a bona fide freaking superstar. Do you think there’s a small chance that the other superstars he played with benefitted just as much from his presence?

Coffey’s last year was spent with the Carolina Hurricanes where he played 69 games, scoring 11 goals and 29 assists for 40 points. He was 38 years old at the time. Damn impressive, even though he was playing for an average team.

Did you catch the part where Coffey’s season average is 72 points? (Bourque never had a 100 point season). Coffey actually has a higher goals per game, points per game, and shots per game average that Bourque.

I just got it.

You’re a Boston Bruins fan aren’t ya?

BTW… Welcome to the SDMB Hockey loungs you putz.

What a great night for a little hockey.

Theodore comes back and the Habs are undefeated in three games, even better… we beat those fucking Islanders!

Osgood got the hook in the third after letting three shots through the pipes in just under seven minutes.

There was pandemonium here (and at the Molsen Centre) when the final buzzer sounded. The fans went nuts.

Next stop: The Rangers.

Did you see the game Slip? You couldn’t have… you were probably watching the slugfest that was the Leafs vs Devils.

The Leafs and the Devils played to another tie, 139 minutes in penalties were handed out in their meetings from last night and tonight and damn, it was brutal. I give the Leafs the win in the fight department.

AND…Boston and Buffalo both got whupped tonight so Montreal gets a little help on their way out of the Northeast’s basement.

And elsewhere in the league…

Iginla scores goal #14 as the Flames buried the Avs 2-0. Turek shut out the Stanley Cup champions to tie Salo and Osgood for shutouts this season.

Heh heh heh … the Kings beat Detroit.

St Louis beat Phoenix and has won 5 of their last 6.

Roy just isn’t having any luck gettin win #200 with the Avs is he? Poor baby…

Damn but I’m in a good mood.

Somebody has GOT to do something about that cheap piece of shit Vaclav Varada.

Now, you’ll never mistake me for something as hapless as a Rnagers fan, much less a fan of the Big E(diot), but I am completely fed up with watching that talentless fuck take runs at guys and getting away with it.

Not only did he cut Lindros above the left eye with his stick, then he turtles like the gutless wonder that he is when Lindros comes after him. Maybe if Sandy McCarthy could shut his yap and actually assume the enforcer role the Rangers had envisioned for him, he could take care of that runt taking liberties with his teammates.

The only guy on that Sabres team with any balls is Biron. Not only does he leave the net and try to hold up Lindros, then he gives the ol’ cheeseboard to Steve McKenna when he comes a-callin’.

Actually, what is worse is someone who can post an unsupportable position while including a link to stats that don’t bear him out. About the only thing you got right was the fact that he missed the graceful retirement train. Paul Coffey was a superstar defencemen lucky to play other superstars. He continued to post excellent numbers after being traded to Pittsburgh (not after Gretz & Moose left - he got traded first - and was told by Sather he’d never win another Stanley Cup - uh huh).

Comparing him with Bourque is like comparing Pavel Bure and Brendan Shanahan: sure, they’re both wingers, but they don’t play the same kind of a game. Bourque was a multi-purpose defenceman, like Rob Blake or Chris Pronger. They’ll score you a point or two, and they’ll beat your ass into the ground in their zone. Coffey had much more in common with Phil Housely - small, puck-rushing D’s who needed to be periodically reintroduced to their own end of the rink. But when your talent is as valuable as theirs, you keep 'em on the ice all the time. That’s not gonna do much for your +/- rating (a bullshit stat anyway, but that’s a rant for another day).

And you’ll pardon me if I put more stock in Bobby Orr’s evaluation of Coffey over yours.

[sub]GO HABS GO!!![sub]

Roy just doesn’t get any love.

As to the wings. It’s not a win, but it’s still a point. It took over-time to beat them. I believe it’s their first OT loss this season.

And Luc did get goal number 600! you gotta give it up for the man.

and boy are my arms tired. hehe

Well flying American Airlines this morning really sucked. Imagine being seated on the plane ready for take-off when the pilot comes on and says that a plane’s been downed in New York. Took us an extra hour to get off the ground as security re-checked everyone’s baggage and let off the passengers and crew who decided not to fly. What a mess. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected today.

In hockey news - that was a great game we saw Friday night. True, the Wings only beat the Ducks 1-0, but it was a shut-out for Hasek (his first of the season?) and we got to see Luc’s 600th goal. Strange thing was, the number of Wings fans there outnumbered Ducks fans by 3 to 1. It was more like a home game for Detroit than Anaheim! I’ll try to post some pics from the game after I get the film developed (if anyone’s interested).

I heard that Varada got a three game suspension for his antics the other night.

Now if they only included a stick upside his head they would be getting close to giving this guy what he deserves.

First: Sorry to hear about your plane ordeal. What a pain in the ass.

I think it’s Hasek’s second shutout this season. But I’d have to double check.

I’m interested in seeing the pictures. I remember watching the Red Wings play in St. Louis during the playoffs about 5 years ago and the stands were far more red than blue. It was wild.
