THE Hockey Thread.

But…but…

When it was 2-2 I thought the game was over.

I need a vacation.

Fuck. I am on vacation. Gotta lay off the cheap plonk.

So we won. I knew we would.

That’s OK, Slip. I forgive you the momentary lapse in faith. Frankly, I enjoyed the hell out of this game. Run’n’gun hockey with solid forechecking by the Leafs. They’re still making dumb-ass clearing passes down the middle but, on the other hand, they put a lot of pressure on Barrass-hole and it paid off.

That’s 2 game-winning goals for Hoagland. Go figure.

Hodge

I meant Hoglund, of course. Sheesh, I don’t think I’ve spelt anybody’s name correctly recently.

Now, if I can just find a way to watch the Edmonton-Colorado game. I think I’m SOL with basic cable though.

Awesome! The Islanders take the Devils 6-4 to win their fourth straight game. Very exciting.

Hodge- If you didn’t see the Edmonton Colorado game you missed the game of the freaking week.

The fact that the Av’s are the defending champions didn’t mean a thing to these Oilers who were happy to pump five goals past Roy in a 5-3 win. The Av’s don’t get any respect when they come here.

No quarter was given by either side through the whole game, Colorado was up 3-2 in the third before the Oilers went postal and put two more between the pipes.

Roy looked like he was going to lose it as it’s not often he gives up five in a night. Salo’s goaltending was impressive as always.

Comrie and Hecht scored their first goals of the season and Scott Ferguson got his first NHL goal by firing a rocket past the best goalie in the game. THAT has to feel really good.

And there were fights, Laraque and Parker fought to a draw and Steve Staios impressed the hell out of me as besides being Sakic’s shadow through most of the night he saved enough energy to hang a whupping on a very deserving Hinote.

Bob Hartley was his usual prickish self and put Parker on at the end of the game, McTavish saw this coming and made sure Laraque, Marchant, Brown, and Morrow were on the ice.

The officiating was fucking terrible, on two occasions Grier clearly beat the Av’s player to the puck and the linesman called icing. BOTH times they realized they were wrong and held the faceoff at center ice. Comrie took a holding the stick penalty when the replay showed nothing of the sort happened, he was just playing good defense. I believe Sakic scored on the subsequent powerplay.

If the officiating had been a little better the score might have been more like 6-2.

Oh well, we kicked their asses… do you think they’ll still be bitter when we play them next Saturday in Colorado?

One correction, Green scored his first of the season and Comrie picked up hi first two ponts on assists.

detop-

I swear on the sacred name of Maurice Richard (hallowed be his name) that there is nothing Slip and his goons could do to me to make we worship those godless Maple Leafs.

And what has that Parrish guy been doing in the off-season? He already has about half as many goals as he had all of last year (in 70 games!)

Hawks win

jarbabyj-

No happy dance? Nothing about “Joyce” getting his 22nd career shutout?

I know what it is. You’re stunned that they won one.

Never thought I’d see the day when jarbaby was at a loss for words.

33 saves. What a guy! I like Joyce

I’m just being cautious. The cubs taught me a harsh, brutal lesson this year:

Don’t get your hopes up.

Go Hawks, she said quietly.

jarbaby

Go Av’s

What…the…freak…is…wrong…with…my…Blues?!
They better get their freakin act together…i’m gettin tired of our early season slumps…

they don’t let dreamy doug weight play enough. Obviously.

Looks like the Habs will notch one up against Columbus tonight. It’s 3 zip in the third.

Gilmour signed with the Habs? What’s up with that?

Slip

Looks like Columbus managed to get one between the pipes before they were sent packing, the final score was 3-1 in favour of my beloved Habs.

Theodore was five and a half minutes away from a shutout tonight and the Habs penalty killing remained PERFECT as they killed seven more tonight. No-one has scored on the Habs this season when they’ve been short handed and this is their best start since 1981-82 when they won ten straight.

I’m thinking this could be a great season and that we have turned the corner. Holy shit, I think that Montreal is first in the Northeast… lemme check… praise the hockey gods because they are.

In fact, Montreal is only one of three teams without a loss right now, the others being the Islanders and would you believe… Minnesota??? Yep, you heard me right, the Wild are at the top of the Western Conference.

I’m going to have to start looking for flying pigs if this keeps up.

Finally…

Blackhawks lose.

Capitols lose.

Sabres lose.

Bluejackets lose.

Oh, on the Gilmour thing…

He wasn’t at all happy to be playing for the Sabres as they had him playing left wing when his position has always been center.

With the loss of Koivu, Montreal needed someone to fill his position, someone with character and leadership abilities.

Gilmour was the man.

Apparently, Ottawa and St. Louis wanted Gilmour as well, at 38 he’s still a damn fine player.

Tomorrow the Habs face those souless Devils from Jersey, a team they couldn’t beat in four meetings last year. Things should be a little different since Montreal’s powerplay is third in the league (26%) and their penalty killing is #1. Jersey’s powerplay is fucking pathetic (0 for 9) and their penalty killing (6 for 12)is even worse. Brodeur’s GAA is a whopping 6.06! It does my heart good to see how far the once mighty Devils have fallen and I will bet that Jersey starts Brodeur in net against the Habs since his record against them is excellent.

My prediction: Habs triumph over Devils by a score of 4-2.

I am starting to feel like a bookmaker…

True – it makes me think that the Islanders had been losing on purpose the last few years! This is very cool, I can’t wait to see how they do today.

Damn Right! You could tell Buffalo wasn’t for him. I wish the Leafs had taken him back like they did Clark a couple of years ago. Ah, the good’ole days of Gilmour and Clark.

The dEVILs deserve everthing they get. They’ve been a pesky roadblock on the Leafs’ path to victory far too often. This will be one of the few times I’ll cheer for Les Habs.

I’m looking forward to St. Louis-Toronto tonight. We must erase the memory of that horribly embarassing collapse last year where the Leafs blew a 5-0 lead to lose 6-5 in overtime. I still cringe when I think of it. The good news is that St. Louis’ goaltending has been truly horrible. Couple that with Pronger’s less than spectacular performance so far and I’m a happy camper. Yep, I bet they could use Turek now.

Speaking of which, Calgary’s top of their division  Watch out Dallas, it may be Calgary’s turn to kick Edmonton butt come playoff time!

The Devils are the most boring fucking team in the NHL, sure they win but I bet few people see this as they fall asleep watching the Jersey defense sit on every lead.

That’s just not my style of play.

Hodge - Don’t get too excited yet, Calgary got lucky the last time they played Edmonton and after looking into my crystal ball I foresee many more losses against Edmonton in their future. The one commment I hear often from opposition players is that Edmonton is not a team to be taken lightly and that’s for good reason… they can beat anyone.

Looking ahead, I pray to the hockey gods that they start Salo against Detroit on the 24th, they have to go into this game expecting to win. Putting Markkanen in net is a sign they don’t expect to beat the Dead Wings. They can.

As for tonight’s tilt in Nashville… they have been having problems converting opportunities into goals so expect Salo to further frustrate the Predators. Their penalty can be shaky and the Oilers have a much improved powerplay this year. Expect to see the Oilers, expecially Ryan Smyth spending a lot of time in front of Mike Dunham. They made Roy their bitch the other night and if this momentum carries on, the Predators are going to get pummelled.

I don’t think I’ll have to sacrifice anyone’s firstborn when Montreal faces the Devils tonight as Martin “Swisscheese” Brodeur will probably give Montreal all the help they need. The biggest mistake Jersey could make would be going into the Molsen Centre thinking that the Habs are an easy mark. Just check my preceding scouting report.

Rant o’ the Day…

What the fuck is wrong with these guys? Ulanov and Purintan of the Rangers each get seven games suspensions for cross checking hits that were made when they played Washington.
The league seems to be making it clear that if you play like a fucking goon and intentionally try to injure another player you’re gone. Ulanov forfeits $170,000 while Purintan is getting off easy only having to pay $34,000. Serves these fuckwits right.

So jarbaby… am I not the most perfect poster you’ve ever met? [sub]Go Blackhawks![/sub]
