THE Hockey Thread.

Hey, did I call it, or what?

I had a feeling that the Oilers were playing over their heads and were ripe for an ass kicking.

The short handed goals were a surprise, though. The Leafs usually don’t have that kind of hustle.

GO LEAFS!

Slip-

It’s good to see you climbed out from under that rock…

The mighty Leafs play Vancouver tonight, my prayer to the hockey gods will be that Vancouver beats them just like they did Colorado.

Speaking of Colorado, the Oilers are playing there tonight… they always play better after taking a loss so I’m looking to see quite a close game.

My Habs have the day off, after all those wins they need the rest, heh heh heh.

What a finish last nite.Scored 2 goals in the last 41 sec.
to win the game
With 9 potential hall of famers…what a team…
…GOD I LOVE HOCKEYTOWN…

keep your stick on the ice
        and the red light lit

Although I will not go as far as to say all is right in the world, I will say that one of the propophecies of the Apocolypse, as outline in Revelations, was avoided last night when the Kings beat the soul-less Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Slip, I guess we’re both happy men today, Toronto beats Vancouver by 1 and Edmonton made Colorado their bitch… again. They’re tied for third place overall now.

There was a poll on Sportsnet last night asking what player gives the best bang for the buck and they named players in the league who are making truly obscene amonts of money. Topping the list was Jagr, he was in the company of players like Sakic and Sundin. None of these guys were a deal as they all earn in excess of 7 million a year and Jagr… he’s getting 11.5 million a season and I don’t know if he’s got a point yet.

Why didn’t the mention players like Anson Carter of the Oilers? 4 goals and three assists in 8 games.

Ryan Smith - 9 points in 8 games (4G 5A). This guy is every goalies worst nightmare, he plays hard every night and makes something like 2 M a year.

For what the Oilers can afford to pay their players THIS is bang for your buck.

What are the Islanders paying Parrish? He’s leading the league with 12 points.

Finally, the Habs face the Caps tonight. I missed the last game and they lost so perhaps I had better watch this one, like I’d have to force my self to do that.

Jagr is worth the money. Through three games he has four points (1 Goal 3 Assists) but more importantly ticket sales are up (as well as prices.) The Caps got a bad break when he went down, and then to add insult to injury Brendan Witt (defenseman) and Steve Konowalchuk (defensive forward) went down (Kono is gone for 3 months shoulder injury.)

While Jagr’s injury makes news, Kono and Witt’s injuries will be felt as they are two of our premier grinders. Not to worry though, the Caps are going deep into the playoffs this year.

As for tonight’s game, I have obtained tickets to see the Habs get their hats handed to them. I told my wife to bring plenty of tissues for all the Hab fans who will see their “dream season” come to an abrupt end tonight. Face facts folks, the Habs suck. Since Patrick “here-honey-run-into-another-door” Roy left the Canadians have been a joke.

Cheers to all the loyal Caps fans out there who have waited 20+ some odd years for a team that can put it together. '98 will be repeated!

BTW-- This is just trash talk before tonight’s game. I intend only to temporarily offend you nothing more.

Also, the Pens suck. This isn’t just trash talk. All the talent they had dribbled out of their ass when Jagr left. I make an exception only for Super Mario, he should be respected, but all those losers (Straka, Lang, and Kovalev in particular) now have to prove themselves for what they really are, a quick flash in the pan. They will never live up to how they played last year.

Mark my words.

What’s up with the Flames? 5-1-0-1? 9 Goals against??? Geez, they might actually make it into the playoffs this year. It’d be about time. What is so great about the Flames rise to stardom is that they can be described as a blue collar team. The only star (in terms of name value and salary) they have is Turek, but he’s been described as a choke artist second only to cough Felix Potvin cough. I’m not bashing the Flames, I am just really surprised by their start. It seems they might be the west coast team to root for. Who wouldn’t love a gang of hard working grinders?

The Islanders will fall. I have no love for them. After what they did to the Caps… <sniff, sniff> I can never forgive them. I can’t wait for them to come to town. I want to see Witt break his foot off in Peca’s ass. This round of Islander heros will leave town next year, it happens every season (Palffy, Turgeon…)

****though I must say that I applaud the Islanders management for picking up Osgood, it was a nobrainer, but still a good move.

GO CAPS!

Potvin, a choke artist???
After single handedly getting the Kings to the playoffs with his stellar play, he beat the Wings and nearly toppled the Stanley Cup champs by taking them to 7 games!!
So how’s he a choke artist???

Potvin, if I am not mistaken, has more 1-0 playoff victories than any active goalie. He had two last year and I think he had three another year. He is no choker.

The only thing Felix does single handedly is the knuckle-shuffle after losing a cluch game. How’s he a choke artist you ask? Well you answered your own question when you said, “he beat the Wings and NEARLY toppled the Stanley Cup champs by taking them to 7 games!!”
He’s been choking since his freshman appearance in Toronto. Felix the cat he’s not. More like Garfield…

You sound like a disgruntled Canucks fan. Could it be that league “leading” GAA the Canucks are posting at this time?

That Canucks comment made me bust a gut. That really had me laughing. In all honesty I had thought the Canucks decided not to play this season to avoid airfare costs…

You don’t happen to be a … a … Kings fan are you? That would be a shame.

I am a once and forever, die-hard Washington Capitals fan.

So you aren’t a Canucks fan. You just had this similar whine that I encountered last year from Canucks fans as Potvin took the Kings on their backs from 13 points out of the playoffs to the 7th seed in 20 games (“Just you wait” “You’ll see”). Then he backstopped an upset of the Wings and took the Kings to a seventh game against Colorado after back to back 1-0 shutouts to keep the Kings alive. The guy is no choker. It is strange you would say so, because I would’ve figured that as a Caps fan you would be an expert at recognizing choking in the playoffs.

Go Wings!

Another reply that had me laughing… Yes, yes, I am all to familiar with the Capitals and their cronic playoff problems. But things are different this year. This year not only do we have a tight defense (once Witt is health and Kono recovers) but we have the top sniper in the league. There’s a steamroller in Washington, and come playoff time there ain’t nothing that’s gonna stop it.

I don’t know how you can pigpile the Caps though. The Kings don’t look so good (Pot, this is the kettle…) Outside of Palffy, Heinze and maybe Glen Murray, they are a very shallow team. I predict that they won’t even make it to the playoffs.

Maybe I’ve been to hard on Felix…
… no, no I don’t think I have. In fact a quick check of his career would prove me correct…

http://espn.go.com/nhl/profiles/stats/career/0415.html

If you’ll notice his freshman season (effective season 92-93) was his best. He played 48 games and went 25-15-7 with a GAA of 2.50 and a save percentage of .910. Not too bad for a rookie back in the heyday of pathetic defense.

Fast forward to the present. Throughout the 9 seasons that followed his rookie season he didn’t match either his GAA or Save percentage. His life time record is one game under .500. He’s a far cry from Roy.

During the 00-01 playoffs he went 7-6 and had a reasonably high GAA of 2.44 for a playoff goalie who made it past the first round.

Let’s see…for this year on ESPN.com’s Goalie rating scale… Potvin…hmmm, mighty far down the list…
On the GAA he is ranked 23rd… For save percentage he ways in at 34th… right in front of Dan Cloutier of Vancouver (Ouch that must hurt!)

He’s a stinker and a sinker.

WOOOHOOOOO…
My brother just called…He has 2 tickets for tomorrow nites
game against L.A…Right on thr glass…
Hottest tickets in town…Seeing how the rest of our pro teams SUCK……have a good one…

keep your stick on the ice

I am very jealous of you! I certainly hope the Wings don’t break the four game winning streak the Kings have against the Wings!

**Feynn,**stop hiding. Come out and take it like a man.

Your Habs got their asses kicked but good, and I revel in their misfortune. They’ve been a stone in my shoe for years.

You gotta admit, Jagr and Bondra owned the Habs whenever they were on the ice.

And while I’m here, I predict that the Leafs will extinguish the Flames tonight.

Slip - You know that I would never hide and as a Habs fan I can proudly follow that time honoured tradition of bashing the hell out of the Habs when they suck ass as badly as they have over the past two games.

They really sucked serious ass last night didn’t they? God help them if they don’t beat the Sabres tonight because I will be all over them. Losing another game just won’t fucking do it for me.

That ass sucking performance does drop the Habs to 4-1-1 for the season and puts them in a tie with those ass sucking Leafs who are also 4-2-1.

I don’t think that Toronto is going to have it easy against the Flames, their defense is rock solid and if you can’t score, you can’t win. The Leafs are going to have to solve the riddle that is Turek. If they do that gives the Oilers a chance to move to first in the Northwest if they beat the Panthers tonight, I don’t see that as being much of a problem so I’ll spot Edmonton 2 right now.

Who let this Caps fan in anyways?

So, the Habs take their third beating in a row at the hands of the Sabress. My only consolation is that Toronto had their heads handed to them by the Flames and the Oilers simply destroyed the Panthers.

They Oilers didn’t even play in the second period and Florida couldn’t manage a win. It’s been a decade since the Oilers haven’t got a shot on goal in a period and when that happened the team in Minnesota was called the North Stars.

Just who the fuck were those guys wearing the Canadien’s jerseys last night? They sucked ass in a big way. I figure that space aliens abducted by beloved Habs and then must have gotten to the Leafs as well. How else can you explain both teams taking the shit kicking they did?

This is really odd, the Blackhawks beat the Avs today… Habs and Leafs played like hacks last night… hmmmm…

The Blackhawks are the space aliens!
