THE Hockey Thread.

I loved watching Osgood play as a Wing, he does have a lot of potential in front of him, but there was no nice way of letting him go. The fact that they couldn’t trade him just seems like insult to injury. It would have been great to keep him as Hasek’s backup, I prefer him to Manny any day.

As far as Legace goes, I think he’ll get that starting position in a year or two. It sounds like Dom is making one final run for the cup, and then wants to pull a Bourque. Hmmm… I wonder if Buffalo will raise his number like Boston did with Ray.

Great game last night against the Oilers, it’s good to see the Penguins winning again too. Tonight should be a fun one, I think ESPN is showing the Rangers/Blues. Any predictions on how that one will go? I foresee a win for NY, the Blues have just looked shakey lately.

Is ESPN really showing the Blues game?

Yay!

I mean, I’m only watching it for the sporting aspect.

There is no doubt the Sabres will retire Dom’s number, he is the best player in the franchise’s history and the fans and organization appreciate that. There were no real hard feelings about his departure.

Feynn

Sorry that the Oilers did not give you the birthday gift
you wanted…NOT…:)…

Hope you had a good birthday anyway…

keep your stick on the ice

Whiny-baby? How do you figure? Even when he was being crucified in the Detroit papers he never said anything but “I love Detroit and I WILL play well next game”. The only time I even remotely heard him belly-aching was when they sign Dom. And he, rightfully so, said “It’s obvious I won’t be the number 1 tender, so please trade me and please do it quickly so I can adjust and the Wings can adjust.”

I’m not sure I’d even call /that/ bellyaching.

At any rate, Osgood is clearly starter quality and I think that Legace would be starting if he were on another team. Detroit is goal-tender-rific.

Okay, do you think that the Oilers can beat the Bluejackets tonight? If they played as hard as they did last night it should be a piece of cake.

It was nice to read the comments from the Wings players on the Oilers today, they hadn’t beat the Oilers in quite a while so this was a monkey they got off their backs. When Federov says something like this it’s good to hear…

“It’s important we get back in the position where we can play against this team well because a couple times the year before last year and last year we needed points and it was tough to take off of them,” Fedorov said. “They play a very tough game, a very fast game, very aggressive at the offensive zone.”

I am thinking that the Oilers are going to go far this year, they are tied with Detroit for the most goals (33) and despite last nights loss have played very well overall.

Now, my Habs have had some serious time to rest and do they ever need it. I didn’t want a repeat of last year but with Hackett out with a shoulder injury and Petrov out with the same it looks like the injury bug has hit again. The reason that the Habs have fared so badly in the past two years might have something to do with the 500 man games of injuries they have had to cope with. When they’re healthy they are a definate threat. Slip had better pray that they don’t find an antidote for this bug or Toronto is going to be paste.

The good news is that Petrov should be in the lineup on Saturday when the face Philadelphia, tomorrow I am looking for the Habs to avenge last Saturdays loss to those godless Buffalo Sabres.

Their penalty kill still remains exceptional, if Petrov can add his firepower to the lineup the fortunes of the Habs might turn around very quickly. You have to score more than one goal a game if you expect to win. Gilmour should have had enough time to get a little more in step with his new teamates so I expect big things from him tomorrow as well.

GO HABS!!!

We’re not going to discuss the Boston-Toronto game. We lost 2-1 in overtime, because the Hockey Gods have always had it in for us. It’s got nothing to do with the quality of our play.

The refs were crooked, too.

Carry on.

Slip doesn’t want to talk about it, I say it’s time for this boy to take some lumps… what say ye?

Ladies and gentlemen of the Hockey thread, I now submit to you the game between Boston and Toronto held on this night.

Slip contends that the referees were crooked, does he offer any proof? NO.

Toronto coach Pat Quinn was quoted as saying:

“We had too many turnovers, poor positioning and were giving up way too many free opportunities.” he could have simplified by simply saying “we sucked”.

He didn’t make a single complaint about the officiating and I should point out that the Leafs were outshot 32 to 17.

It’s clear that Toronto was sucking big time ass and it’s amazing that the Leafs didn’t take a beating like the Flyers did tonight at the hands of the Senators. Seven to two was the score there. What a blowout.

So the Oilers beat the Bluejackets like a rented mule tonight, I expected no less after last nights loss but figured the score might have been a little different than 5-2. I was thinking it would be more like 18-0.

What does Quinn know?

He’s just a coach. Had he called me before the game, I could have given him some excellent advice.

I would have told him to instruct the team about the importance of positional play, to keep the turnovers down to a minimum, and not to give away too many free opportunities.

But did he call? No. He thinks he knows more about this game than I do. The jerk.

And the refs were so crooked. They’ve always been against us. They take 15-20 games a year away from us. The bastards. And of course, Quinn is too chicken to speak out about it. Or maybe he’s in on it with them. I never trusted him.

Hey, I said I don’t want to talk about it.

Slip, my friend.

I sense your pain and understand that more than anything, this is something you need to talk about. You need to get this out in the open and let the healing process begin. If you keep it in this will only affect you in negative ways.
Already I see that your mind is creating conspiracy theories and warping your perceptions.

Yes, the Hockey Gods hate the Leafs. You need to accept that, it’s a fact of life as much as the sun rising in the east.

I’m here for you buddy.

GO FLAMES!!!

Ok, so we lost tonight, but still get a point and damn we’re getting them one hell of a lot of them so far this season… I just hope they can keep this up till the playoffs, and make it into the playoffs… for the first time in far too many years…

GO FLAMES!!!

The Flames, Edmonton, Islanders and Detroit are on a roll. But, as much as I love Detroit, I KNOW a losing streak will come. Injuries are inevitable on a team that has several whole lines of players over the age of 35.

It’s still so early, but I really like Calgary’s chances and I think that the Islanders will do well overall. Edmonton is always a pleasant suprise. They do a lot on their pay-roll. Every year, Edmonton does some great recruiting and then gets looted by big pay-roll contenders when those players become free-agents. Thank god there is a wealth of quality players in the minor/European leagues for Edmonton’s scouts to pick up.

Well, it was certainly Rock em Sock em hockey tonight when my beloved Habs took on those godless fucks known as the Buffalo Sabres. They won 5-2 and Savage scored a hat trick but I am not feeling as joyful as I should.

It got ugly after the Sabres right winger Varada took out Montreal goalie Jose Theodore. After two meetings with the Sabres we’re missing our two best goalies. What the fuck is wrong with this picture?

I can’t really blame Gilmour for taking on Varada, I don’t know what happened to Theodore because we don’t get coverage of Montreal games here but I’m thinking Varada had an ass kicking coming to him for his fucking cheap shot on Theodore.

I’ll be checking sports central to see if I can find out more.

There will be suspensions forthcoming for Varada and Gilmour so my Habs will need another centre. Hopefuly Theodore will be okay and back to play. If not, Varada had better watch his sorry ass because he will be a marked man for a very long time.

FUCK!

I dunno what Lindy Ruff is on, but I’d sure like a hit or two, cuz the delusional world he lives in looks like fun…

This is a guy who, apart from still believing the league stole a Stanley Cup from him two years ago, can watch “over and over” a tape showing Varada dropping a knee on Theodore’s head, and call it an obvious attempt to get out of Theodore’s way.

…ummm, what?

z

zoony -

It’s better late than never, glad to see you finally made it. I will have to point out that you’ll have to get in line behind me cause I have dibs on Lindy Ruff’s head.

Varada is another player like Scott Parker, a winger who doesn’t score goals but is in there just to cause carnage.

Theodore suffered a concussion in the incident and Gilmour and Varada both earned themselves a one game suspension. That’s not nearly enough for Varada and Gilmour should be given a medal for basically saying enough is fucking enough.
I think the lack of Theodore who is out indefinately and Hackett (out for 10) are going to really hurt the Habs, Garon let 5 goals in last night as the Canadiens lost to Philadelphia.

Edmonton - Vancouver

I have to tip my hat to the Vancouver Canucks, despite losing 3-2 to the Oilers last night they actually made the Oilers look slow on the ice. Their playing was great.

I don’t know what to think of the Oilers new Jerseys except that they look like the fucking Kings in that dark blue (that looks black) and silver. What the fuck was McFarlane thinking when he put that design down on paper?

I kept waiting for Brashear and Laraque to get it on last night but Donny didn’t seem to want anything to do with big George. I think Brashear knows he’s out of his league on this one and if he wants to keep his head he had better lay off the cheap shots. He’s a good player, he needs to spend more time on the ice and out of the sin bin.

Anson Carter (15 pts) only scored 16 goals last season, this year he already has 9 goals and has put up 9 points in his last seven games. Both he and Ryan Smith (14 pts) are in the top ten. Jerome Iginla just happens to be the leading point getter in the NHL right now with 19. Anyone with these guys in their hockey pools has to be pleased.

Edmonton (17 pts) leads the league in scoring so far with 41 goals, and are in the top three with Detroit (18 pts) and Calgary (17pts).

It is going to be a very interesting season.

Oh yeah, Toronto beat the Pens.

Ok, will someone please confirm that the NY Islanders are good, but not THAT good! I mean, they are playing above their level, right? They are in the zone or something right?

I mean, when the season started, I was happy for them, but I didn’t think that they’d be in the top 3 teams in the league. Is the east really that much softer than the west?

Oh, and they didn’t televise the Dallas-Detroit game but the highlights looked good. Looks like Hull got a warm welcome.

I wonder how ESPN’s power rankings are going to stack. Clearly the Islanders will retain top spot since they won their last several games. Detroit might drop to 5 or even 6 despite having 18 points. Soley because they lost the game to Dallas.

We didn’t just beat them. We skunked them.

Sheesh. The guy writes a post longer than War and Peace, and the Leafs get one line.

It’s okay. We’re used to being the Rodney Dangerfields of the league.

Hawks…still on a streak.

Daze is our man this year obviously.

But the end of that third period last night. ICKY boys, ICKY

jar

Dear jarbabyj,

My Kings will end their horrible play of late with a resounding thumping of the Hawks tomorrow night.

Respectfully,
Tretiak

I’m sorry, but as I may have a pair of tickets to that game, I’m afraid a Hawks loss would be unacceptable.

Sincerely,

jarbaby
