"The Honorable" Elijah Muhammad - self-awarded title?

The late Nation of Islam leader (1897-1975) often had “The Honorable” or “The Most Honorable” appended to his name. I haven’t been able to find out who awarded him this title, but suspect he did it himself. What’s the Straight Dope?

The NOI’s website says that founder Fard Muhammad awarded Elijah Muhammad the title of Supreme Minister. Maybe “Honorable” as a form of address came along with the title.
