If this were a movie, we just saw a film about an international business cartel involving the future President of the United States end where the patsy in the scheme gets convicted of a gun charge that not even the President’s opponents are supportive of.
ROLL CREDITS
I want my money back. This movie sucked. Where’s the damn box office? They’d better still be open!
He was obviously guilty by both the letter and spirit of the law. Not that I think the law is a good one either way. But I’m not surprised the jury quickly convicted him. Nobody is changing their opinion about him, the only matter of consequence is the sentence. And he can afford to extend the process through appeals before the sentence is imposed. Very helpful to be rich in our legal system.
I agree with her. If Hunter was acquitted by what amounted to jury nullification in Biden’s home jurisdiction, it would look like blue state juries cannot be trusted.
It would of course be different if he was actually innocent.
They should take mention of marijuana off the 4473 form, but that’s not why he was convicted.
If he gets prison time, he should appeal, because that would be grossly unfair. But if he gets the likes of probation, community service, or a few weekends in jail, he should consider the political context and forgo options only available because of his wealth.
It may be that his deadline for filing an appeal (30 days after sentencing) wil be after election day. I hope he will not rush to file.
Some poster on X is saying Joe lied quite a few times in his recent gun speech( taught somewhere he didn’t, etc.).
I didn’t know where else to post this.
“Some poster on X is saying” is meaningful in what way? Are they saying something that’s true? Not true? Do you think it’s worth finding out the truth of what they are saying before spreading information that may well be just propaganda and lies?
Do you suppose if asked Joe would say “Sorry, I misspoke, I wasn’t teaching there, I gave a speech there”? Or do you think he’d say I absolutely taught there and anybody who says I didn’t is lying"?
I think they should enforce the law equally, and not just high profile people. The law is the law, and until marijuana is removed, then ALL. users of marijuana who checked the “no”. Box on this form should be heavily investigated and prosecuted. Every last one.
Big impractical waste of my tax dollars. Marijuana use should be mildly discouraged, similarly to tobacco, but focusing on form 4473 would be bad public policy. Ideally this should be handled by Congress legalizing marijuana federally, at least where legal under state law, but Congress is too slow, so we have to let prosecutors ignore laws that no longer have enough public support.
If the police in my area only enforce that check box when the cocaine using memoirist is Black, that’s an equal protection violation it is practical and wise to stop. But if they only enforce it when the whole bizarre scenario of the Hunter Biden situation puts a case in their lap, that’s normal inevitable prosecutorial discretion.
Another aspect is that there was a special counsel with more time on his hands than normal prosecutors. This could be another reason that Hunter was prosecuted. His friends may think it unfair. And it would not happen in a utopia. But the cure of getting rid of special counsels would IMHO be worse than the disease.
So I guess just go after high profile political enemies then. Sound legit. Save those precious tax dollars!
Another aspect is that there was a special counsel with more time on his hands than normal prosecutors.
Oh ok then. Just chilling in his office, not much to do….
“Say! Let’s find someone who checked the “no” box on this form! Probably 10 thousand to choose from…. Who shall be the one person we will go after cause we’re bored? Decisions, decisions…”
But now, of course, Republicans will be reassured that the justice system is impartial. Oh, wait…
From the Guardian:
]This trial has been nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the Biden Crime Family, which has raked in tens of millions of dollars from China, Russia and Ukraine,” the Trump campaign said in a statement.
Matt Gaetz, the far-right congressman from Florida, was distinctly dismissive, posting on X: “The Hunter Biden gun conviction is kinda dumb tbh.”
That was echoed by Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, who derided the conviction as a distraction from worse crimes he claimed have been committed by the president’s family.
“Hunter Biden guilty. Yawn,” Kirk wrote. “The true crimes of the Biden Crime Family remain untouched. This is a fake trial trying to make the Justice system appear ‘balanced.’ Don’t fall for it.”
Nancy Mace, a Republican congresswoman for South Carolina, implied that the verdict was a sham. “Timing is everything. The veil of fairness in the justice system under @Potus,” she wrote.
Stephen Miller, one of Donald Trump’s closest advisers during his first presidency, went further still, posting: “DOJ is running election interference for Joe Biden – that’s why DOJ did NOT charge Hunter with being an unregistered foreign agent (FARA) or any crime connected with foreign corruption. Why? Because all the evidence would lead back to JOE.”
I see no evidence that prosecutor David Weiss is Federalist Society MAGA or any other kind of extremist. It rather seems he’s doing his job.
While he was nominated by Trump to be a U.S. attorney, the staffs of Delaware’s Democratic senators checked him out and Trump nominated him on their recommendation:
