The Ice Tray - more complex than once thought

Too mild a rant for the Pit.

At work we have a fridge in the break area. It doesn’t have an icemaker, so we use ice trays. Simple enough rule - you empty it, you fill it back up.

Apparently this concept eludes most of my cow-orkers. They’ll empty the tray in the ice container, but don’t bother to try and get the cubes out intact. This leaves partially broken ice remains in the bottom of each compartment. Rather than try to break this loose, they just add water on top of the remains and refreeze it.

The problem is, when you try to get the new ice out (usually by giving the tray a twist), the cubes explode out in shards and the mess gets all over the floor. If there’s someone at the table (the area is very small), they’ll look at you like you’re the Anti-Christ.

Why is it so hard to make the sure the tray is EMPTY before you fill it up again?

Hey, at least they try to fill it back up. I used to have a roommate who refused on principle to fill the ice tray.

Makes me glad that the fridges in this building all have ice makers.

Savdes grief over not refilling the trays, but don’t get me started on people who stuff their bottle of soda or whatever they want to get cold quickly into the ice bin. Now and then, a bottle gets forgotten and explodes, necessitating the disposal of all the ice and cleanup of a sharp and sticky mess.
