Veteran dopers will remember Charley as the newspaper columnist for the Orlando Sentinel. His anti-evolution column sparked the Flat Earth thread in Great Debates which ran to 1,000 posts before it was done. (We could blame Charley for Phaedrus coming here!)
He is a member of the League of the South, an organization which believes the South should have won the Civil War and stayed separate from the Union.
He is homophobic.
He is racist.
He is sexist.
He is anti-choice.
He is anti-Semitic.
And he has a job writing for a mainstream newspaper.
In his most recent column, he lists the reasons not to vote for Bush instead of Gore as these:
He ends the column by saying, essentially, we should vote for Bush because we can be sure that he won’t work too hard!
Click on the various links to previous columns on the right. Each column will allow you to read further and further back.
Worst of all, one of his columns last year was about life on a pre-Civil War (Which he calls “The War of Northern Aggression”) plantation that he claimed “was a paradise for planter and slave alike.”
True, he has the First Amendment right to write what he likes. And I have the same right to criticize him.
I work with a bunch of total fucking idiots. I have worked with and known total fucking idiots for most of my life. I have studied total fucking idiots extensively since I graduated from high school.
I am, therefore, reasonably expert in the field of total fucking idiocy as practiced in America today.
In my expert opinion, Charley Reese is a total fucking idiot.
He’s still around? I used to see his columns in the LA Daily News about 10 years ago. I read about a paragraph of one once, and realized he was a grade-A nutcase. Sort of like Pat Buchanan without the charm
Bush is for the constitution?
Then why doesn’t he support religious freedom? (Prayer in schools-if that’s not a violation of CandS I don’t know what is…)
For some reason the Clarion Liar here runs his column still. Seems like he has the same shtick he plays again and again. I recall when he popped a few teenagers with his handgun for being in his hot tub. Great Guy.
Unfortunately, the Orlando Sentinel has upgraded its website and the links to Charley’s old columns that I made in previous posts on this thread no longer work. In fact, you cannot get any column that was published prior to December 5, 2000.
I fear the putz smiley is not enough for this . . . person-type thing.
However, this is: there is something called radicalism, Charley. Invest in ideas that do not make youout to be the raving looney so many think you are. It would go far to establishing your case, if you have any (I don’t think you do, but the impossible has happened before).
Saint Zero -
Wait a minute there! I remember liberal columnist Carl Rowan shooting at (but not hitting, as I recall) a couple of guys in his hot tub. Did this guy do it too or are you just confusing the two?
