The kindness of those who protect and serve

I was just reading an old Ann Landers column in which this woman talks about the kind firemen and policeman who saved her life after a suicide attempt. After she sent them a thank you letter, the firemen came to visit her with a Christmas card and a plant. linky

This reminded me of my own story which I want to tell yous guys.

When I was 13 and my sister was 15, we were home alone one day during Christmas vacation. My sister’s crazy boyfriend (who she was avoiding) came to our apartment. I refused to let him in the house. He started pounding on the door and broke it off one hinge. I called the police and this very nice policeman - whose name I sadly forgot, came to the house. He took a report, comforted my sister, called my mom at work and comforted her. Then…he rehung our door! I was astonished even then that he stayed to do that. When he was getting ready to leave, he gave me his pager number. He told me that if the boyfriend came back, to call 911 first and then call him. He said that no matter where he was, he’d come back to us.

Sure enough, I had to call again about 1 hour later and sure enough, he came all the way from the other side of the city. He stayed with us until my mom got home half an hour later (she had to take a bus and it took a while).

We hear so many stories about police brutality and corruption and the good stuff tends to get overlooked. So, anyone else have any stories?

A few months ago the apartment next to mine got broken into. The police came and asked me questions (I hadn’t heard anything) and let me know that the thief had only stolen panties (?!). I had left my bedroom curtains open, as it was hot and I wanted the breeze to have no obstructions, and was feeling very freaked out (I lived alone at the time).

About an hour later the police stopped by again, to let me know that the thief had been caught, and to make sure that I was safe and had someone to call if anything else happened. They double-checked my window locks and phone lines, and gave me some safety advice. The owner of the apartment next to mine was gone, so they went out of their way to come back and make sure a silly frightened girl was okay.

They also asked me to go through drawers full of panties to make sure nothing of mine had been stolen- not relevant to the story, but also not how I planned on spending my Saturday night
