Well it’s been quite a while since I heard of this story so: Has anyone heard what happened to that lady who hit the bum with her car and then let him bleed to death in her garage?
I saw a CSI which rehashed the whole thing, but the original case is still on my mind.
This has got to be one of the most cold-blooded deaths ever. She hits the guy while under the influence, drives home and parks the car in the garage, with the guy still in the winshield. He bleeds to death slowly over a period of hours, possibly days, with the woman periodically going out to check on him. When she checks on him, the guy pleads for her to call for help. When he dies, her friends help her remove him from the car and they dump his body.
Originally, the time frame was thought to have been days, but this article says that it may have been hours, rather than days. (But possibly as long as 24 hours.) Irregardless, there were reported to be no internal injuries (his leg was nearly severed, but no damage to internal organs), and the accident would most likely have been survivable without the loss of blood over the time period involved.
The woman was a nurse’s aide. She has been charged with murder, and is in jail with a $250,000 bond necessary for release.
This site indicates that someone who helped her is being charged with tampering with evidence, and faces 2 to 10 years in prison.
I haven’t found anything referring to date of trial, other than a report on June 25th of the fact that the trial date hadn’t been set.
Wow, she’s even colder than I thought. I think I heard the 24 hr figure from her attorneys statement though. Whatever the case I think she should serve some SERIOUS time for it.
I asked my friends this question just the other day, and it was pretty much agreed that she’s just waiting to be tried now. She’s been charged with murder, but with the back up in the judicial system, her actual trial could take about a year or so before it even comes up again. For example, just last week a man’s trial finally started for a series of rapes he was arrested for over a year ago. He was charged, put in jail, but had to wait a year before he could actually be tried and convicted. Apparently this is fairly common. She’s guilty, I guess they’re just taking their time trying her fully to get a complete sentencing.
I’m confused. What about the guarantee of a speedy trial? How does the judicial system in her area justify over a year to try a defendant? I think this woman’s actions are detestable and she needs to be severely punished, but I’m also concerned about the considerable lag time between crime and punishment.
It is common with most cases such as this, the defendant has waived their right to a speedy trial. It is almost always requested by the defense to allow time to prepare.
Here’s the police report on the incident from The Smoking Gun. The coroner who did the autopsy is one of my classmates’ fathers, but I haven’t talked to him about it.
