The Last Man on Earth - season 2

After the first episode, I was pretty excited about what new directions the show might take. Maybe Phil and Carol will spend the season searching the U.S. for each other and they’ll each find a new group of survivors!

Nope, they found each other again almost immediately and went back to the same old group of people for the same old hijinks. Bummer.

I thought I saw some flowers in the backyard. Does that imply the existence of bees (to pollinate the flowers)? And the solar-powered working deep freeze might come in handy when they butcher that cow.

I think he’ll splash down in the Pacific, close to the Malibu shore—our gang spotting it—just as this season ends (lucky they have a jet ski!).

I’m liking the slow, yet flawed, redemption of Phil. And also the cracks of imperfection in the rest of the group. They’re all becoming unraveled in their own ways, and I think Phil 2.0 is going to make a big douchebag out of himself next episode.

For me, the show’s still fun as hell. I love it. The slow-mo shot of Phil eating the bacon in pure bliss was awesome.

And that he did; I wonder how the gang will fare without him. I’m surprised how much this show is delving into post-apocalyptic logistics; first all the canned food expiring, and the gasoline expiring. That hardly even get’s addressed by writers.

Even though I’m a bit disappointed with the direction this season had taken (I was hoping each season Phil(Tandy) & Carol would find a new pocket of survivors, so they could introduce new characters and attract a variety of actors & actresses) I have to admit, I also like how they’re dealing with all that would happen after the collapse of society. This is definitely the most unique sitcom on the networks.

While it opens up so many questions for the future now that the gas is starting to turn, it was such a mundane detail that really sells the setting.

And while it’s clear that Tandy/Phil is a douche, I like how it’s been showing that Todd and Other Phil aren’t that much better. That their nature or their trauma or the lack of a real society makes them almost as bad as Tandy/Phil.

The annoying thing is that the show occasionally mentioned real problems, like the gasoline deteriorating but then ignores other stuff. Like in the last episode Todd discovered a stash of bacon in a still-working deep freeze in a home with solar panels. So in this episode when the power failed, why not just move into that house?

And without other people around, how long can they expect the natural gas supply to continue? Does that deteriorate? Will it continue to come in via the utility line?

This show is on the ABC network?

That is most astounding to me. First that it’s on one of the Big 3 networks. And second, of all the networks, it’s amazing that it would be ABC who would be the one because they are not well known as an “edgy” network and this show can be quite “edgy” at times.

It’s on the Fox network. Where did you get the idea that it’s on ABC?

Oops. I watched a few episodes - mainly to see January Jones - and I was sure I remembered seeing the ABC logo. I guess I was mistaken.

It sure didn’t seem right that it would have been on ABC.

Thanks.

Mary Steenburgen gets all the best lines. She’s the best part of the show to me.

Nice to see Phil 2.0 in the stocks, but it’s not going to end well at all once he get’s out!

Well I think the Christmas episode was pretty good (though did Erica go to Chicago and back for Oprah’s chair :dubious:). I’m curious too if/how they manage to pull of Phil’s brother surviving that (also if he was going to kill himself why bother with the spacesuit).

Yeah, I enjoyed the Christmas episode too. Best sitcom on tv right now, I think (ok, that’s a pretty low bar).

Having Phil’s brother kill himself by going out in space without a suit would have been a tad too grim for a comedy. I think his character was supposed to be thinking “one last spacewalk”, and somehow he’ll make it to another space station or something and find a re-entry pod, a la Sandra Bullock in Gravity.

So wonder what’s up with Phil 2.0- appendicitis? Looks like they were prepping for surgery in the previews next week, yikes. I know I wouldn’t want that lovable bunch of incompetents anywhere near my innards with a scalpel. I had a surgery game on an old Mac Classic years ago in which the goal was to successfully remove an appendix. Even with step-by-step instructions on what to do, I killed the virtual patient every single time, and gave up after a couple dozen attempts

I binge-watched season 1 and up to the Christmas episode in season 2.

Over all, I like the program. Season 1 was a breath of fresh air as far as TV sitcoms are concerned, although Phil 1.0 increasingly grated on my nerves with each episode until by the end of the season I’d had just about enough of him.

Season 2 is better than 1 in my opinion. Phil 1.0 started the season almost successfully allowing Tandy to die, but by episode 5 he was almost 100 percent Tandy again. I am glad the show writers have de-jerked Tandy a bit for the newest episodes.

Carol is my favorite character, followed closely by Phil (Tandy). I think Phil 2.0 is my third favorite, with the other characters falling somewhere below that, and Betty…er, I mean Melissa being tied with Tod as my least favorite.

I liked just about everything about the Christmas episode.

I am happy Phil 2.0 came back.

Well Phil 2.0 is dead, but good on Gail for trying. That was a nice bit a black comedy with Gordon’s corpse. I’m going to assume Mike survives reentry; otherwise it’s kind of a waste killing off 2 characters at once.

I wouldn’t put it past them if Phil 2.0 still yet somehow survives.
Great cliffhanger ending to the first half of the season.

Is Tandy ever not annoying? He’s usually trying too hard to be liked and it’s painful to watch. Even when not trying to ingratiate himself into the group he’s annoying. I can’t quite place what it is about him that drives me nuts.

Wow, they really ratcheted up the Tandy in this episode, didn’t they? Sheesh. I didn’t think I could cringe so often in 22 minutes.

They should have just thrown as many antibiotics as they could find at him. Better chance at survival than having a non-doctor chopping at him.
