"The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price - a Post Apocalyptic World Critique....

I’ve been watching the classic movie “The Last Man on Earth” starring Vincent Price on Hulu, and I figured it would be fun to critique how Robert did in this Post Apocalyptic World (PAW), what he did right, what he did wrong, and how he could have improved his situation and had an easier time of survival, because let’s face it, even though the movie states that the creatures he’s fighting are “Vampires”, they share more in common with Romero-verse Zombies, with a touch of O’Bannon Zombie thrown in (intelligence and the ability to speak)

They’re slow
they’re stupid
they’re predictable
they’re no stronger than they were in their breathing days
they are dangerous in numbers or when VP is cornered
they can be shoved away or run from
all these traits are “Zombie-esque”
their only “Vampiric” traits are their liquid diet, their aversion to sunlight, mirrors and garlic
(Boy, New York sure had a lot of Fiat 500’s back then  )

First off, what he did right
1; Using wooden stakes as his primary weapons, since these vampires are slow, stupid, brainless and easily avoided in small numbers, firearms are not needed to dust them, wooden stakes are easily created from scrap lumber, so there’s no need to worry about stockpiling cartridges and shotshells for firearms
2; trying to befriend the dog, pity that it was infected
3; curing the Zompire woman
Now, what he did WRONG

1; staying in the city, where the concentration of vampiric activity is the highest, he should have headed for the suburbs or the wilderness
2; allowing his shelter to be compromised repeatedly by the Undead, they know where he lives, so they simply wait for him to come out, eventually Robert will slip up and they’ll be able to feed on him, he should have abandoned his shelter and found a new one after it was compromised
3; not keeping a low-profile when in his shelter, watching movies, playing music, and generally going about his pre-apocalyptic life, he should have kept a low profile, kept quiet, and presented a low prey profile, he should have stocked the upper floor and destroyed the staircase
4; not keeping track of time, when he fell asleep in the church and woke up in the evening, he should have sheltered somewhere in the church for that evening not risk his life just to go home, he should’ve waited until morning to return to his compromised original shelter
5; relying too much on prepared/preserved food and garlic, in the initial opening of the movie, Robert makes a comment about how he has to make the garlic last, why not take a few bulbs, split up the cloves and start GROWING YOUR OWN GARLIC
6; for that matter, why doesn’t he have a garden for sustainable/renewable food, garden in containers if he has to, but have something growing, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes , something, canned/preserved food should be used only as a last resort, in the event of a total garden failure
7; when the Vampire SWAT team was coming after him, abandon the shelter that he should have abandoned ages ago, but before leaving, turn on music, lights, etc… try to make the house seem occupied, use it as a diversion

So, basically, to sum up, he should have;

1; left the city, found as rural a shelter as possible
2; abandoned his existing shelter once it was compromised
3; in the new shelter, keep as low a profile as possible, keep to the second floor, destroy the staircase
4; keep trips into the city to a bare minimum, and only to replenish supplies
5; keep the canned/preserved food as final backup/last resort
6; have a garden for both food and a source of garlic to repel the “Zompires”
7; have a fallback Bug-Out location so when Vampire SWAT appears, he can vacate the area
