The legal ramifications of heavy rainfall

I learned something fascinating on the news this evening. We’ve been having a lot of rain here in the New Orleans area, and the newscasters were kind enough to inform us this evening that:

  1. Only people who live on a flooded street are allowed to drive on it;

  2. You’re not allowed to speed when driving on the flooded street you live on; and

  3. Any flooded street is a no-wake zone.

That’s right, in Louisiana they have officially made creating a wake with your automobile illegal. Which kinda takes all the fun out of going out to try to drown my car by driving it into water deep enough that I could create a wake, you know?

The mind boggles.

Strange. Around here, they always say DON’T drive on flooded streets at all, because it’s easy to misjudge how deep the water is.

I guess they had to make laws about it because we’re so prone to flooding. Slidell got 11 inches of rain Monday afternoon alone, and there are several neighborhoods around here that have been underwater every other day for a week. You’d think they’d just tell people not to drive in the floods…but no, they have to decide who can drive where and how fast! Sheesh.
