It goes on like that all night, almost every night. I lived in the area for a while and just couldn’t get enough of it. It is truly sad to see such a unique phenomenon disappear. Not to mention the practicalities of it being a huge generator of tropospheric ozone.

Here is hoping it comes back.

Oh, man! That is sad. It was one of my favourite quirks of the earth. I do hope it comes back, too.

I have to assume in some small way the loss is related to climate change?

Since the phenomenon itself is not fully explained, it is even harder to explain its failure. It is believed that it has to do with the current drought on the area, related to El Niño. That said, it was slowly weakening before the drought began, probably as a consequence of silting of the delta due to development of the area.

Someone needs to update the Wikipedia article accordingly.
