She graduates soon.
How did this happen?
It was only a day or two ago and I was crying about her starting kindergarten.
She is going for her doctorate. So, I assume my bank account will be depleted more.
She’s a good girl. She is a special one. Sucks the air out of a room when she enters.
How did I get so lucky?
I always ask myself how I could possibly have created two human beings who are as fantastic as my two kids.
We are both lucky, Beck.
In what subject? In a professional field, like medicine or education, it’s often normal for the student to pay for the doctorate, but if it’s primarily an academic degree (i.e., the expected career path for someone with a doctorate is becoming a professor), THEY should be paying HER. She should be prepared to walk away from any department that doesn’t give her a funding package or at least a clear promise of one after the first year. (Usually, the standard deal is tuition remission plus enough of a stipend to pay for a shared apartment and a lot of ramen noodles, in exchange for about 20 hours a week as a teaching or research assistant. Some departments prefer not to put their first-year students to work, but after that, they should offer nearly all students funding.)
I assume she’ll qualify for funding. She has done her undergrad on a full ride scholarship.
She’s a smart cookie.
But she also likes to spend Momma’s money.
We’ll see how it goes.
With luck they all grow up. Sadly, then leave. Mine all did. Congratulations, Beck, you done good.
