How can someone on the West Coast who has never been to the tristate area understand the true meaning of “New Jersey” as a cultural metonym? Is it fair to say it is to NYC as the San Fernando Valley is to L.A.?

I am actually astonished by how few rules this board has. That said, TOS reminds me a lot of the US Constitution in how broadly it can be interpreted and argued. Like the US Constitution, this is probably intentional. Surely the subjectivity involved will engender conflict, but I think the rules are so broad and vague precisely because of a desire to interfere as little as possible.

IME modding other places, the more detail a rule has, the easier it is to play.

“1. Don’t be a jerk” is a very easy rule to understand. In case of doubt, add “2. If a mod/immort/monitor/call-it-X says you’re being a jerk, you are being a jerk and see rule 1”. I’m not much for rules but I am in favor of “don’t be a jerk”.

Not unless the Valley is filled with chemical factories and bleak urban landscapes and the cast of The Jersey Shore.* Given shows like that and The Sopranos I would expect people throughout the US to have an image of New Jersey culture.

Based on the stereotype of the “Valley Girl” I would say that the comparison with the San Fernando Valley would be to Long Island rather than to New Jersey.
*Yes, I know that there are some very nice places in New Jersey and its image isn’t entirely justified. I’m talking about the stereotype of New Jersey rather than its actuality.

Those areas (mainly along the NJ Turnpike) are there on purpose to discourage Bennies from coming to NJ. The Jersey Shore has virtually nothing to do with New Jersey however and the cast were all out of staters. Sadly the Sopranos is almost a reality. Close enough for TV. New Jersey is the best and worst of states.
