The Major League Baseball Playoff and Predictions Thread

Honestly, even though I’m a huge Mike Lowell fan, and I couldn’t be more thrilled for him… I really think that Pedroia and Ellsbury should have been co-MVPs. They were freakin’ amazing.

I might’ve gone with Papelbon as well. He was huge.

You really can’t go wrong with any number of guys.

Too true - I, too, worried that the Red Sox might be hexed by the curse of Leskanic. Glad to see it’s finally over.

Congrats to the Red Sox - the better team won. Congrats to the Rockies, National League Champions. Next time try to extend the NLCS to five or six games.

Appreciated, RickJay, but unnecessary. I wasn’t all that perturbed.

Colibri, I think you were victimized by not catching all the posts upthread. I’ve actually been consistently bitching about FOX’s coverage, as much or more so than the character of the Red Sox (about whom I admit, I’ve come not to like them very much). I’ve got heaps of attitude about the way FOX botches their coverage of what should be the premier sporting event of the year, every damn year. Given that, plus the length of the games, plus the fact that I really don’t have a dog in this hunt, plus my distaste for Boston–the fact that everything I saw in the first three games told me that the Rockies simply weren’t good enough to take even one game from the Red Sox, that was simply the proverbial straw breaking the back. I’ve hung in there for many a lengthy postseason game and series, many times over the years, but the accumulation of reasons not to watch was more than enough to keep me away.

And then, of course, ironically, I came home from my evening walk and did wind up tuning in, because there simply wasn’t anything else on. (Actually, that’s not true: PBS had a show on about bees and colony collapse disorder, fascinating stuff really–but I only saw parts of it before turning back to the game.) And what I saw tonight was exactly what I saw the first three games–the Rockies were always a day late and a dollar short. Just not enough.

What I’m curious about now is: what do we all think about what this postseason has meant regarding salary structure in MLB? Does the success of three relatively low payroll teams, getting themselves into the LCS, finally refute once and for all the notion that you can just buy your way to a championship? Or does the ultimate victory of the highest paying of the final four actually validate the concerns about the potential competitiveness of small revenue, small spending teams? I’m not sure where I come down on this, and I’d like to hear what others think.

Also, is there any independent confirmation yet on the A-Rod story, or is everyone still going on Sam Rosenthal’s story during the broadcast?

You’re thinking of Willie Mays. I can’t imagine Williams doing such a thing. How could he refuse to tip his cap if it weren’t on his head?

Seriously, Ted Williams didn’t have much speed to show off, and he wasn’t inclined to showmanship.

Just yay.

I watched the last strikeout in a room with a whole bunch of friends and the cheer was enormous. We hugged, laughed, and one guy even cried. What a fantastic night.

Oh yeah. Cut me a break, they both played well before I was born.

It could go either way, depending on how you want to argue it. But on the side of the “low payroll” you have the fact that the biggest contributors to the Red Sox winning the Series were the rookies and the stalwarts, not the big-money “stars.” OTOH, the stars got that way by producing over the course of a season, and are the people who got the Sox to the Series in the first place.

Pick’em.

There’s one silver lining in a Sox sweep - FOX misses out on airing another 1-3 high-revenue baseball games.

Thank god. If I never see that girl jog into the side of the car again, it will be too soon. Ditto for the insufferable Taco Bell ads with big bro giving advice on girls with tattoos.

My biggest fear now is that wth A-Rod leaving NY, the Yankees will have a lot of money and need a 3rd baseman. And Mike Lowell will be a free agent.

I don’t particularly care to see A-Rod in a Sox uniform, nor do I think it’s likely, but how are they going to fill third base if the Steinbrenners park the money truck in Lowell’s driveway?

Well, if he does go to the Yankees, you can console yourself with the fact that, based on his career numbers, he will probably never again perform at anything like the level he did for Boston this year.

Yeah, exactly like Boston.

Heh heh. True that.

Boston fans have to come to grips with the fact that no-one is going to feel sorry for them any more, either in their baseball battles with the Yankees, or in their money battles with the Yankees. The days of crying “curse” and “poor” are well and truly over.

And honestly, I’m sick of other teams trying it, too. I’m a Cleveland fan but I have no patience for anyone bemoaning the history of the Indians. Joking about it is fine, but the people who are convinced the Indians are dooooooomed need to be pinched.

snort…That’s my MIL. The other team gets one run and she’s like “Here we go again”! and throws her hands up in the air. I’m like “It’s the top of the 1st, jeez there’s a lot of game to go” Of course in this post-season she turned out to be right.
Congrats to the Socks. I was hoping for a bit closer series, just because I find a close game to be a lot more exciting. And I’m glad I won’t have to watch Fox anymore. “This second strike brought to you by Visa.” :smack:

since the series is over, here’s some off season news. The tigers acquired Edgar Renteria from the braves for Jair Jurgens and Gorkys Hernandez.
