The Marvelous Ms. Marvel

And that’s an exclusively Christian belief?

^^ That was the scene I had in mind, yes.

(Edited: I don’t think it’s realistic to take it as indicative of anything but a Christian faith.)

Really? Because Jews are somehow less monotheistic than Christians?

There is nothing in the Marvel movies that indicates that Captain America isn’t Jewish.

He is from Brooklyn. That does raise the odds somewhat.

An Irish guy (I think) from Brooklyn, no less.

I mean if you honestly want to argue that Captain America, basically the idealized personification of America’s self-perception, a country which is like 80% Christian, isn’t obviously codified Christian in absence of any indication to the contrary, then well, go right ahead, because I don’t think I can physically bring myself to care.

Rogers flat-out states “God doesn’t dress like that,” not “The Talmud supports the idea of a dress code for G-d.”

Definitely not Jewish. And didn’t we see him eat a hot dog somewhere in the first movie? Definitely not kosher.

God, according to Jewish thought, has neither shape nor form. God doesn’t dress like that because God doesn’t dress like anything. The Christian version of God, however, is often depicted as having a body, and therefore very well could dress like that. If anything, the quote in question supports my point.

And the hotdog could have been Hebrew National. Or maybe he just doesn’t keep kosher.

Steve Roger is codified many things: the 1940s, Brooklyn, the U.S. military. He is not codified Christian anywhere except in your mind.

Doesn’t the Old Testament make reference to God telling Moses that he couldn’t look on His face, but he could look at His backside? Sounds like a form to me. :stuck_out_tongue:

When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.

Right. I would argue that in most places in the U.S., if you grab a hot dog from the nearest place, like a 7-11 or something, it’s more than likely to be an all beef hot dog.

A favorite line: “a group of ghosts and their average looking son”

In any case, the Marvel wiki says both his parents were Irish.

Back to the thread topic I suppose…

Avengers (2012) opens with Captain America saying that he is a catholic after Thor first meets him.

The full quote:

Avengers (2012) opens with Captain America saying that he is a catholic after Thor first meets him. Catholics, as well as other Jews at that time, were primarily Christian during this period.

…huh?

Is that the Earth-616 Cap, or the MCU Cap?

That depends. Am I in the African savanna?

As far as I know, 616 Cap is not Jewish. For one thing,Marvel would have made it pretty clear by now. MCU Cap? I’m 99% he’s some flavor of Christian .

Any references to body parts of G-d there are are, according to Jewish theology, metaphorical, speaking in a way that human beings would find familiar to get the point across. And also, the verse you’re referencing does not mean “backside” in the sense that it’s usually meant in English, i.e., buttocks, but the back of the head.

(Yes, I saw your emoji, but even though you clearly meant some degree of tongue-in-cheek, I didn’t want it to go unexplained for the casual reader.)
