Okay, going off of a few things that the Oracle said, and then a comment about bullets made by Persephone, did anyone else think that they were alluding to the fact Persephone’s husband (who’s name I forget) hired werewolves and vampires to be his body guards? The oracle makes a comment that rogue programs are responsible for all the myths such as “ghosts, werewolves, vampires and the like;” Persephone shoots the one guy in the head after talking about how hard these old programs are to kill because “who caries silver bullets in their gun?” and the Twins, whenever they went ghosty or gaseous, grew fangs and claws. Sure, they didn’t burst into flames in the sunlight, but still. And, the two bodyguards were watching a vampire film, I thought that was pretty good. During the fight with the bodyguards, I was waiting for a few of them to transform into werewolves, but I figured that would be pushing it a bit much. Still, it seemed interesting to me that they pointed that stuff out earlier. Maybe it was just me.
Anyone know what vampire movie the body guards were watching?
I’m not sure which of the many Matrix threads is the right one for this, since there’s not much point to it:
I have to say that I liked the sequel about 1000 times better than the first movie. The first one just annoyed me, it was so astoundingly unoriginal. It could be just because I went into the sequel expecting to be disappointed, but I ended up enjoying it. For one thing, it was as if they started coming up with some fairly new ideas instead of just regurgitating stuff from other sci-fi & cyberpunk movies. The Keymaker, aside from the obvious Ghostbusters inspiration, was a neat idea and was well-handled.
Sure, the plot was muddled and stuff just seemed to happen without a logical flow from one scene to the next. Yeah, the dialogue was way too wordy, like someone trying to convince the audience that he’s intelligent. And yeah, some of the action sequences just didn’t work at all for me – in particular, the battle against all the Agent Smiths. (There was no tension in it, it did nothing to further the story, it went on way too long, the best bits were already shown in the trailer, it was so obviously CG that it was difficult to suspend any disbelief, and many of the stand-ins/CG models were glaringly obvious, and I never notice that kind of thing.)
But the whole highway sequence from the time the twins follow the gang into the garage, until the end, was just breathtaking. Worth the price of the movie just for that one scene – if you can take somebody as jaded about effects movies as I am, especially one pre-disposed to disliking the movie as I was with the Matrix, and have him sitting in the audience grinning and whispering “hot damn!”, you’ve done a good thing.
Err, before somebody calls me on that I should correct it. “Inspiration” is the wrong word, since the characters are nothing alike. It’s just that the first thing anyone thinks of when he hears “Keymaker” is Ghostbusters.
It was cool seeing downtown Oakland in this movie. If you look closely at the freeway scene you can see the Bay Bridge in the background.
I had the pleasure of being an extra for the scene in Zion. We parked right next to the freeway that they created for the movie (Yes, they created a two mile section of freeway for this movie on the old Alameda air base). I was there when Morpheus did his speech! Look for me, I’m in the back. It was absolutely weird seeing that at the theater.
As far as the movie, I have seen it and I thought it was great. The only problem I can forsee is that this is a second installment of a trilogy and usually the middle movie sets you up for the ending, so they are not that interesting until you see the third installment.
Just got back from the movie. I was hugely impressed. The idea that Zion is a different Matrix didn’t occur to me until I read this thread (well, it occured to me right after I saw the first movie, but I didn’t connect what Neo did at the end with the idea that they’re still in a Matrix.) I like the explanation so much because it removes my primary problem with the first film: the whole human harvest idea. If Zion isn’t real, then that entire explanation goes right out the window, and we won’t know what the Matrix is really about until the next film.
Come to think of it, the idea that the “real” world is also a Matrix ties in nicely with what happened to the third ship. That string of unlikely coincidences that killed the entire crew was pre-programmed. A scripted event, if you will.
I liked that the machines in this movie aren’t presented as a monolithic entity, but factionalized, and with some programs favoring mankind (or are they? The Oracle seems compromised now, but what about the Keymaker? Another pawn, or a willing part of the program?)
I’m very much excited for the next movie. I’m at a loss as to where they’re going with all this, but I’m loving the ride.
My friend told me that the Agent Smiths vs. Neo fight didn’t do anything for him either.
I’m amazed to hear that. I was thrilled as much(if not more) by it than the car chase sequence. Yes, I could they were CGI and not the real actors for good chunks of the fight, but I am impressed the Brothers were willing to be the first to push the technology this far.
That was, by far, the furthest we have seen digital creation of existing human characters gone. I, for one, say, “Thank You” to the Brothers for having the guts to do it.
Not to mention, the music in both that scene and the car chase were perfect, with a powerful enough beat to carry the action.
Actually, my friend and I (27 and 30 respectively) were shushed because we were making too many comments:
[SPOLIERS]
-“This is terrible!..In addition to Zion, the machines have also targeted the Sunglass Hut and the Leather Emporium”
-“Fortunately, Zion also has a J.Crew store”
-“Wow…those Zionians are awfuly jacked and tan for living half their life in a coccoon and the other half miles underground.”
-“Since ‘you can only truly know someone by fighting them’, Neo should probably kick The Oracles ass”.
-“I’d like to think that 100 coppies of me could kick anyones ass”
-“I hope the entire movie won’t be in ‘bullet time’”.
-“The would be great if one of these 50 theater doors led to an exit”
-“Are you the Keymaster?”
-“I get to kiss a hot chick but I have to pretend she’s my girlfriend!!!..OH sweet irony!!”
-“Funny how the Cadalacs driven by the good guys can take 100 rounds while all the Volkswagons, Saabs and BMWs flip over and explode from driving over the speant shell casings. I wonder if any money changed hands.”
-“Humans behavior can easily be predicte…HEY!! STOP PLAYING WITH THAT…ARE YOU DRUNK?!”
