If he was a “true believer taking one for the team”, he would have said it wasn’t authorized, period. Think about it.
Look, I think Rand Rover is usually wrong about everything, but in this case, he’s correct. I don’t know if being “right” about this has any value; it doesn’t make any difference to me if the campaign authorized it or not.

I think that conclusion is a misunderstanding of Godwin’s Law, which states:
Godwin doesn’t apply to winning or losing the argument at hand; it merely notes the asymptotic approach to certainty that Nazis or Hitler will be invoked as a debate continues.
So this is merely evidence that Godwin was right.

I disagree. The Olympics, the World Cup, US Presidential Elections – there are only so many once-every-four-year entertainment packages to choose from; and this one is at a premium, I’d say.
You’re forgetting the corollary, which states that whoever made the comparison loses.
