I refuse to believe that the “national costume” of Great Britain involves sitting on top of a tower of tulle with a frightened expression. Unless they are trying to turn losing your head at the Tower of London into a FABULOUS LAS VEGAS EXPERIENCE!
And apparently “Strictly Ballroom” was a documentary about the traditional national costumes of Australia.
Miss Greece’s outfit is both elegant and nationally evocative. Her hair is freaky, but I love the rest of it.
Miss Finland’s dress is also beautiful. The aurora association is lovely, though it took me a moment to make the connection.
Of the more elaborate displays:
Miss Japan is very striking, in more senses than one.
Miss Thailand’s outfit appeals to me for some reason. She looks like she’d make a wonderful villain for an RPG.
I like the “tailfeathers” on Miss St. Lucia’s costume, but the headgear frightens and confuses me.
Miss Angola’s outfit looks like a nightmare drawn from the slumbering mind of Jacques Cousteau on an absinthe-bender, but I can still respect the way she wears it. Anyone who can look dignified in that getup deserves some props.
Ohh… wait, I get it now, Denmark… you’re a fairytale princess… 'cause you’re H. C. Andersen’s homeland… right? (I suppose we shall ignore the stories where the protagonist dies in utter misery.)
Miss Serbia looks like they lost the suitcase with her outfit.
KG, yeah, I also thought Egypt was doing a sort of homage to Liz Taylor’s version of Cleo. And yes that IS a sailing ship on Miss Netherlands’s head… at least they tried.
OTOH huge respect for Miss Mexico embodying Day-of-the-Dead icon *La Catrina *… stylish AND culturally allusive.
France, really… I sure hope that tray is not… (googles a better picture) it IS cake Oh, I see what you’re doing there, you’ve realized this is like Eurovision in the '00s and should be played for laughs if you’ve no chance of winning…
OK I looked up Venezuela and it’s not bat wings – she’s supposed to be a nature/water goddess so that’s probably supposed to be based on some fantastical aquatic creature.
Miss Japan’s is GORGEOUS. Also, damn, is that live steel? Miss Singapore and Miss Vietnam’s were lovely, too.
Miss USA is bleh.
Miss Malaysia’s is kind of cute, even if showing it three times is overkill.
I hate Miss Greece’s hair, but the outfit is very elegant.
Miss Serbia’s getup strikes me as being the result of some horrendous accident happening to her OTHER costume just before the show, and then one of her staffers saying something like “fuck it, just throw on a sweatsuit and wave a flag.”
A lot of the former Soviet Union countries appear to be a bit lacking in this department (though Poland’s was quite pretty). The South Americans, on the other hand, are very, very good at this. The Asians are, too (except Korea, apparently).
And am I the only one here who actually liked Ireland’s? I thought it was quite neat.
I understand why the Spaniard was dressed in Faralaes (flamenco dress, pic 56) but damnit, she’s from Elche! Faralaes may be what furriners think Spaniards wear while snacking on chorizo and bad wine, but for most of us it’s not.
Miss Italy wins the Ralph Wiggum award. Aside from the colors, nothing at all says “Italy” in that outfit. Not the shiny red garbage bag nor the green fan.
I didn’t think it was that bad, but I did have to struggle to go all the way through them. The only way I made it through was to hide the name, and try to guess the country. I was only right on the Asian ones and the ones that were obvious like both USAs and Guam.
I still don’t get Canada. Are American Indians a big deal in Canada? I know I don’t think of them. If I’m thinking native, I’m thinking further north and colder climates.
Yeah, it’s not what a woman would usually wear. I guess they just wanted to change it up a bit. It’s a pungmulnori costume and usually associated with the lower classes.
mrAru and I thought Miss GB was wearing a traveler’s wedding dress …and we would not be surprised it if turned up at the cheezburger wedding site in a traveler wedding soon.
