The money in "Road to Perdition" (spoilers)

I just watched Road to Perdition and it feels like a key bit was edited out. Michael Sullivan goes on a robbery spree to steal Al Capone’s money and then offer to give it back in exchange for Connor Rooney. And then - nothing. He doesn’t contact Capone, he doesn’t mention the plan again, and the money plays no further part in the movie.

So what am I missing here? Was it addressed in the graphic novel?

?

I thought the money was left at the farmer’s place where the son went to live.

I assumed that was just some of the money; it looks to be much less than what we see when Sullivan dumps his bag in the car’s secret compartment.

Even if that was all the money, what happened to the “hold money hostage to get Capone to give up Connor” plan?
