How do you arrange the bank notes in your wallet or wallet-equivalent?
They are all in order, lowest to highest or highest to lowest denomination. They are all in the same orientation. All folds and wrinkles have been straightened out
They are somewhat organized but there are no exacting standards.
In order, highest to lowest, consistent orientation. That way I can see at a glance how much I have on me. However, I don’t worry about folds and wrinkles. I’m not that obsessive.
I keep a billfold in the car with an assortment of large & small bills for [whatever]. All face up, face forward, large bills on the back / bottom, small bills on the front / top. They’re smoothed, but not obsessively so; probably some folded small corners, etc. Back when I carried a billfold everywhere, the bills were arranged likewise.
When traveling I carry a pocket money clip of 1s & 5s for tips. All faced with all the 5s on the inside.
Spare cash of several denominations is stored at home. Each denomination is a separate properly-faced stack in a binder clip.
A wad of random or crumpled cash makes my teeth itch.
I do sort them a couple times a week but when I get cash in change I just shove it in and sort it out later. Mostly they are in order and facing the same way and straightened.
I keep them in order, lowest to highest so it’s easier to count or to tell at a glance about how much is there. I don’t care which way they face or if they have wrinkles or minor folds - if folded in half, or near to it I would unfold it.
Occasionally a dollar will find its way into my pocket. Those always get laundered
Some (many?) people have told me that they keep all bills facing the same way because “the bank wants (or even requires) it that way for deposits”. A few jobs I’ve had over the last several decades required that I make cash deposits on a regular basis, and never has a bank teller suggested such a thing, or rearranged the bills that I hand them. One bartender at my favorite watering hole is a ‘must all face the same way’ guy, and makes an annoying show of turning paper money around before putting it in the register, so I usually re-face bills before I hand them to him just for harmony’s sake. But he’s also the guy who constantly straightens stacks of already-straight napkins and won’t allow a straw to stick up even a millimeter above the rest in the caddy.
Back in the '60s or '70s one of my cousins used to keep her bills in denomination order, facing the same way, and flattened and smoothed. I think if an iron was handy she would have used it. The best (saddest?) thing is that the bills of each denomination had to be in order by serial number! She didn’t get out much.
I have one of those minimalist wallets these days with a money clip on it but still arrange any cash in order of denomination and facing the same way. Then it gets folded up and slipped into the clip.
In reality, it’s pretty rare that I’m carrying any cash at all but, if I am, that’s how it’s done. Only reason for it is my own edification and ease of use.
I love laundry money. I have coffee can in a cabinet where I put it. It hides there a day or two. If you come asking about cash you left in your pocket I may feel generous and get it for you. I may. No promises.
In my billfold wallet, I have two sections for cash. Twenties and up in one, lower denominations in the other. My day to day wallet is a slim wallet with room for 3 cards and a ID, with a center slot for cash, folded in half. I keep about $70-80 with large bills folded inside the small bills.
The bills in my wallet are all the same - $20. I never put anything less in it. All change from transactions, bills and coins alike, goes into the cup in the car for use are drive-thrus, etc.
I start out with the bills flat and in order of denomination, smallest in front. Larger bills go into a separate pocket, anything ten and under goes in the open front flap where I can reach it easily. Then, after a long time (I hardly ever use cash), my wallet gets wildly disorganized from me cramming my change in there any which way, often with the receipts. If I go to the ATM or get ready for a trip, I’ll reorganize it all and start the process over.
Oh, and of course they all face the same direction with the presidents’ heads up. Jefferson doesn’t like hanging out upside down.
This exactly. I’m more likely these days to be carrying a random quantity of cash that dwindles down to a random mix of ones, fives, and tens before I stock up on 20s at a machine, so checking to see how much I have at a glance is very useful. In the olden days, back in the 20th century when I was born, I needed to carry more cash and reloaded whenever I dropped below $100 on hand. That used to be a lot of money.
