The most bizarre Old Wive's Tale regarding pregnancy?

Prenatal and Postnatal Flavor Learning by Human Infants

The paper concluded that infants who had been exposed to carrots prenatally were more likely to appear to enjoy them after weaning.

Great. So you have a responsibility to your baby to eat all that stuff you wish you liked.

the heartburn/hair thing always seem to be that the majority of babies have hair when they are born and the majority of women get heartburn while pregnant. I never get heartburn whether pregnant or not and all my babies were born with lots and lots of hair.

The ones I heard were:

If you take a bath that is too hot or too cold during pregnancy, it will cause
miscarriage.

If you crave salty food, it will be a boy. If you crave sweets, it will be a girl.

Carrying high, it will be a girl. Carrying low, it will be a boy.

If you don’t hang a mobile above the baby’s crib, he/she will be cross-eyed.

Well, this is based in fact, I believe. I’ve always been told by my caregivers not to use a hot tub or sauna, and to avoid raising my body temperature too much. I also imagine actual hypothermia would be a risk. But of course, you’re unlikely to run a bath in a normal home bathtub that could reach either extreme.

Regarding the “girls taking away your beauty” belief - there is some basis in my experience, in that women I know who had girls tended to be more disfigured/bloated by their pregnancies than women who had boys. They also tended to have worse morning sickness and dark patches on the skin. I know this is anecdotal, but it made me wonder if (a) it was more than a coincidence and (b) if so, whether there is any physiological reason.

My grandmother said the kid would get the port wine stain if mom touched her face while having a food craving that was unsatisfied.

I did this with Kid Kalhoun. I performed a less-than-perfect bite once and made him bleed. To this DAY he reminds me of it. :frowning:

I wonder if this would work, or if the stress hormones you would produce while eating yucky stuff would just make the fetus recognize it as a bad taste.

I think the reason behind avoiding a hot bath is the same as avoiding too much sun. Apparently when you get too hot your blood comes to the surface to cool you down, and when you are pregnant this means blood is taken from the rest of your body and puts your heart under extra pressure.

When I was about 7 months pregnant with my third child I was told that he was in the breech position. In order to turn him around I was told to prop an ironing board against a bed so that it was at an angle. Then to on the ironing board with my legs on the bed and my head near the floor for 30 minutes a day until the baby flipped.

It took 3 days.

That’s not an old wives’ tale … it’s a technique for giving baby room to flip. There’s a whole website devoted to getting babies to turn head down … spinningbabies.com. I am surprised that they were concerned about position at 7 months. My OB wasn’t concerned until I hit 36 weeks (8 months). And all but the biggest baby will be able to change position up until delivery day (barring complications with the cord or anything).

Not sure about the status of this one… My son was born the day after a big snowstorm. Several people claimed that a large low pressure system will cause women to go into labor and that birth rates are highest after a storm.

Kind of a plunger effect?

While I recognize that some nursing babies have problems with their mother’s diet, I’ve never heard that new mothers shouldn’t have chocolate. Until my very thoughtful MIL brought me peanut butter fudge, since presumably I couldn’t partake of the chocolate version she brought also.
If I were to be banned from chocolate for the duration of breastfeeding, I wouldn’t have made it a full year either time.

I did not lick my newborns, but I probably kissed them a million times and ended up with the same effect, whatever it may be. That “new car” smell has got nothing on “new baby.”

On a similar note, the current thinking is that pregnant women should avoid the new Rambo movie.
