The Movie Game II

Tara Fitzgerald

The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain

Not one of Hugh Grant’s worst. For Pete Postlethwaite, I wanted to use Usual Suspects, but it being searchable (ie no common or short words in the title) I saw it had been used. This film provided inspiration for me in a long fight I had, and ultimately won (more like a TKO in boxing terms, I suppose - but they paid me!), against my former employers. It’s amazing what advantages can accrue as soon as people start underestimating you.

Which film inspired you, US or TEWWUAHBCDAM?

And what’s become of Aesiron?

Colm Meaney

Oh, Usual Supects. Specifically, I drew inspiration from it when I was representing myself in a legal case (having gone through two sets of lawyers who said I couldn’t win). One day, I was speaking on the phone to my counterpart at the defendant’s lawyers and I asked him a rathers simple question. When I put the phone down, I started to beat myself up for apparing such a dolt. THEN, it came to me. That’s exactly how you are best served as appearing. So, after that, from time to time - the pre-trial lasted 19 months; would have been longer if I hadn’t contested all the delays they asked for - I would ask something I knew the answer to: to encourage them to underestimate me, to do things they wouldn’t normally do (in terms of taking risks - lawyers are very risk-averse), and to make them think I was an easy enemy.

Shades of The Art of War (which I had read) as well.

Best advice my second lawyer gave me (he popped up again to help me “out of court”, ie sit in the public gallery during the High Court trial, set for 21 days) was about the witnesses for the Defence, mostly my ex colleagues and friends. “They will all lie”.

He was right.

Possibly one of the best advantages you can hope for, in fact.

I like Colm Meaney. Good actor. Underrated.

Road to Wellville was fun.

Lara Flynn Boyle.
