the movie theater collection plate

ok, before i start i feel like i have to say that no matter how this post may sound, i am compassionate and i’m all about charity.

having said that, is anybody else pissed off when they pass the jimmy fund can around the movie theater before the previews start? i don’t know how widespread this is, but i live in jersey and everytime i see a movie on opening weekend, the damn 15-year-old usher makes the donation speech, and next thing i know they’re passing around the canister. this is usually accompanied by the jimmy fund commerical with the ironworkers and the kids in the hospital.

the whole thing reminds me of going to church as a kid. when they passed the collection plate, and people would put their money in, it always seemed to me that everyone was looking to see how much everybody else put in the basket and trying to find out who didn’t put any money in at all.

my suggestion would be this. just put the damn jimmy fund can at the box office. i’ll gladly give a couple of bucks after i buy my ticket. i just resent being guilted into giving to charity.

This “Jimmy Fund” sounds like a local deal. The only national collection in movie theaters I know of is the annual Will Rogers collection, which used to take place only in the early summer (not all year) and in the last few years they’ve quit stopping the film and actually having the ushers collect and gone to showing the film clip and letting you know you can give at cans in the lobby and concession stand.

The Will Rogers fund originally began as a fund for members of the vaudville industry who were prone to TB, and has expanded to research of pulmonary diseases and disorders.
