Okay. I had an idea for how we can try to capture the elusive 1,000,000th post to MPSIMS. It will take a few volunteers to be on watch during the period most likely for the odometer to roll over. It will take each volunteer sitting on the “home page” and refreshing the page as often as possible. Once the MPSIMS post count hits 1000000, the volunteer takes the same sort of snapshot that I just did. It will identify who posted and at what precise SDMB Time which (as we know) is about nine minutes off from real official internet time.
I will submit this post as my clock (which I just now synchronized with Internet Time) hits the next minute just to give a reference point.
Does my proposal sound workable? Do we have a few volunteers? We’ll need to try to estimate the best chance for the odometer to roll over. I have done (I think) three of these time checks in the past 24 hours, so the rate can be estimated from those timings. I know the rate won’t be linear, but we ought to get to within the 999,000 range fairly closely. From there we’ll need some watchdogs.
Anybody up for this?

For some reason, I think this milestone has been hit before (and will be again) because of deleted/archived threads.
Am I imagining this, or does anyone else remember this too?
Lsura, I wouldn’t be surprised, since the sum of the forum post counts doesn’t appear to total the grand total which is now over 3,000,000. It would just about have to have happened on some forum. Would it have been MPSIMS, you think?
I have only been around a couple of months, so I have no memory of it.

Roughly 600 posts in roughly 12 hours since last time check.
I’m submitting this one at 5:21 PM CDT
Well, it looks like I’m out.
I am going to do my very best to be around and online to scan for post #1,000,000.
BBC’s website is notorious for spelling mistakes and gramatical errors. In titles
wtf?
I think he posted in the wrong thread, Mikie.
Yeah, he also posted that in the Ctrl-V game.
Yeah, he also posted that in the Ctrl-V game.
Yeah, I saw that later. Sorry.
Carry on.

So, Mikie, you say you’ll volunteer to help catch the big rollover? That makes two of us.
If what Lsura says is true, we may see it reset to 1 instead of 1000000. Any ideas about which it may be?

Sorry guys. I let boredom get the better of me,and the frustration that every time I went to ctrl-v thread there was nothing new in my ctrl-v.
If I was an evil Mod I’d manually boost the ticker to 1000500 just for the fun of it.
I’ll say Aug 19, 10:50PM
Bleech! What an embarassing thing to say. I blame fatigue. I mean about a quarter of the spaces aren’t going through and I’m having to < back and add spaces between my gunked up words.
I’m changing my guess to Monday morning at 11:30 AM Straight Dope time. I also predict the person who posts it will be eating a donut. A jelly donut.
Is there any way of knowing who will make the millionth post?
(hoping and praying that hasn’t already been asked and answered many times, so as to save my rep as a not-lazy person)
(did I say that out loud?)

Lobsang, it will require somebody being on the “home page” to see that information. Some of the earlier posts actually discuss this.
I went to the “front page” and added up the post totals from each forum total and the result is off by about 10,000 posts from the “total” shown in upper left. That suggests that the rollover has not happened before. That is unless the whole board’s total rolled over earlier. I doubt that.
