"The Muppets" (2011 movie)

Anyone else see it yet?

I took the Small One today. The movie was pretty good.

One the plus side, I was extremely pleased that the tone and execution of the movie was true to the original show and movies; it was pleasant, funny, kind-hearted, broke the fourth wall over and over again, and made reference to the previous instalments but avoided making itself “dark” or being mean spirited. There were lots of good laughs (The scene where Rowlf is recruited was hysterical) good songs, and they did “Rainbow Connection.” Chris Cooper played a fine villain.

On the negative, the movie spent too much time with Jason Segal and Amy Adams’s characters and not nearly enough with the Muppets. That’s saying a lot because I think Amy Adams is a scorching hot sex goddess and would gladly pay $10 just to watch the woman shop for groceries, but the movie could have stood to pare back on their story and spend just a few more minutes with our fuzzy friends. There was also a pretty huge mismatch between Segal, who is a competent actor at best, and Adams, who is an acting genius. Even in these light roles she was really killing him by comparison.

I give it a solid 8/10. Not perfect, but it was good seeing our old friends again.
