Clocking in at about 63 minutes, Dumbo is one of the shortest films in the Disney canon. RKO wanted to extend it an extra ten minutes or so, but Walt said no; he’d told the story he wanted to tell. (Besides, it would have cost an extra $500,000, he said).
Dumbo is a warm-hearted movie. I enjoyed the character of Timothy Q. Mouse the most; the little guy who adopted Dumbo as his best friend. “Baby Mine” was my personal favorite song by far; it was a very touching moment that always brings a tear to my eye.
It was Mrs. Jumbo’s great misfortune that the ringmaster popped in right while she was spanking Dumbo’s tormentor, and that he didn’t see what led up to it. It may not have made that much of a difference, though. The ringmaster doesn’t seem like that much of a forgiving guy. (And realistically, Mrs. Jumbo could have done serious harm to several people.)
A lot of bad things happen to Dumbo in a short time, but he perserveres; it’s a great underdog story. One of those stories that celebrates the wonderful differences that people have that make them special.
