Having just viewed it, I have to say Pinocchio is least. A very scattershot story. But I later looked it up on the wiki and discovered the original 1883 book was even more random, and much meaner and bloodier as well, with exploding snakes, Pinocchio biting off a cat’s paw, pummeling the cricket, etc.
Favorite is Peter Pan. Flying always seemed the ultimate adventure.
I think I like Aladdin the best. I enjoyed the story, the songs were fun, liked the setting, and I saw it in that magical time of my life when I was old enough to understand it but young enough not be to jaded. I also enjoyed the hell out of Hunchback of Notre Dame, but apparently I’m in the minority on that.
I also didn’t like Pinnochio much, but I like Peter Pan even less (sorry). I found him to be a jackass and annoying. He basically kidnaps children and inflicts Stockholm Syndrome on Wendy. Not to mention he had another girl on the side (Tiger Lily). And lets not mention his total ignorance of Tinkerbell and using her powers like a slavemaster
Do Pixar movies count? Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo (produced in partnership with Disney) and Wall-E (produced after Pixar was acquired by Disney) are all pretty amazing.
Because I grew up when Disney’s classic films were only available every seven years or so, I missed seeing most of them at the age I would have been most impressed by them. Seeing them as an adult I can appreciate what achievement they were for their time but for the most part they really can’t compare to the best modern animated features, not just technically but in terms of characterization and storytelling.
My favorites: a tie between Jungle Book–overall, and certainly the best music of any title by far–and Pinocchio, hands down the best artistically.
Least favorite? Oh, too many to mention. Snow White is certainly the most overrated. Beauty and the Beast is the most transparently manufactured to craven marketing ends. The Little Mermaid is the most atrocious bastardization of the original source material–oh wait, then there’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. *Pocahontas *is the most mind-bogglingly just *wrong *Disney dreck since, well, Song of the South . . . yeah, too many to mention. Blecch.
Most Favorite: The Jungle Book – Great animation, great songs, great voice acting.
Runner-Up: Pinocchio – Maybe the most beautifully drawn of any of the features. They hadn’t learned how to cut corners yet.
Least Favorite: Home on the Range – It’s an utter stinking pile of crap. I can’t think of a single good thing to say about it.
My favourite is Mulan. I also like the Pixar movies and Aladdin, but Mulan’s the only one I’ve actually bought. I haven’t actually watched that many Disney movies, so I don’t know how Hercules and the like compare.
Oh I strongly disagree. I just recently watched Snow White for the first time [since I was a small child.] It was absolutely wonderful. But then I love minimalist storytelling (I chuckled but also loved the way they literally just skipped the denouement, for instance) and muted color palettes. And yeah, I liked the songs. So what.
