The "must see" college football games of 2007

The list at Yahoo! Sports entitled Ultimate road trip: The best games of 2007 could serve as a starting place for us to determine the best picks by week for the 2007 season.

Which games in your opinion should be on the list?

Here’s a stripped-down summary of the picks from the OP’s linked article:

I’m keeping this short version to use as a source file. I’ll add any reasonable suggestions in the appropriate weeks. If this thread gets enough replies I’ll repost the updated file after the page breaks.

I think UGA/S. Carolina in week two will be an excellent ball game.

It’s definitely one I’ll be watching as my priorities run in this order:

  1. Auburn if they’re on TV
  2. Other televised SEC games
  3. Games involving televised Top 10 (that week) teams
  4. Games involving teams that are rising fast by beating the pundits’ picks. Last year it was Rutgers.

Unless they’re the only game in the time slot, I choose not to watch Notre Dame, since they’re usually the most over-rated school playing football.

But that’s just me. Viva SEC!

(I’m interested in counting the number of games in that article by the same team.)

Substitute Georgia for Auburn (though a member of our household is currently a student on the plains), and I could have written your post.

Other games I’ll watch:

-Anything involving snow.
-Most any weekday game (especially at the beginning of the season)
In general, I get depressed about the relatively short period of time we have to watch what is, quite possibly, the greatest sporting tradition anywhere.

Just for reference and comparison NCAA Must-see Football Game(s) of 2006 didn’t get started until August and didn’t get many replies. There were oodles of pre-season threads however.

So far, OU/Texas is the only one on my radar. Neither team has a superstar this coming season. Should be good.
(Too bad they both can’t lose.)

I’ll be watching that one, too.

BTW NCB, did you get to see Day of the Jackal? I watched it on TV this week. Still holds up as one of the best, if not the best movie of its kind.

Yeah. It holds up well over time. I did kind of like the Bruce Willis / Richard Gere version, too tho. But the original was a much better experience for intrigue and suspense; great screenplay.

I will never watch another college football game for as long as I live.

The Losereens cured me of that with all of their god-awful style of playing, decades after decades.

Here’s another way to look at the Yahoo! Sports selections.

The sorting criteria I used were:

  1. Number of games for which that team was chosen
  2. Earliest week the first game was listed
  3. Whatever order the original file was in

If your favorite team isn’t listed and they play a game (or more) that you consider to be significant, please say so.

If your favorite team is listed and other games they play are important to you, please list them.

It’s fairly obvious how the author of the list views which teams will produce exciting or important games. Where do you differ?

By the time football season is ready to start – it looks like August 30 – the TV sports channels will have made their choices and we’ll be stuck with their ideas. I’d just like to get the jump on them for once and see how well they do in predicting what’s going to be worth watching.

As it is, I will have my list made out so I can be watching up to three channels at once (what with picture-in-picture and Antenna A and Antenna B options) and may even DVR some games if swapping back and forth looks too risky. But even with that level of addictedness, there are conflicts some weeks that just seem too arbitrarily scheduled.

I want to be ready with my list(s) well in advance so I can plan for the weekend and actually enjoy the games.

While I know most of the country doesn’t watch anymore, I almost always make it to the Army-Navy game. Me and about six or seven guys that I graduated with usually buy tickets together, and it’s always a great time. Navy has owned us lately, but the game is always well contested on both sides, regardless of the overall records. Neither school is part of the “big time” college football, but it’s still usually a very good game in my opinion. And none of the kids playing has much of a shot of ever playing an NFL game, they aren’t playing to try and drive up their draft stock and signing bonus but for pure love of the game.

Another game that is usually not that big on the national college football scene is the Harvard-Yale game, which is also usually fun to watch.

Thanks for those mentions, Martin Hyde. I also enjoy those old-time rivalry games, especially when they don’t conflict in time slots with “more important” games on my list.

I found the Wikipedia article on List of NCAA college football rivalry games to be both entertaining and educational. I had no idea there were that many of them. For me, the “Iron Bowl” has been THE game of the sort, but lately I have been trying to get into the spirit of others like it. The Louisville-Kentucky Governor’s Cup (Battle for the Bluegrass) is one I have been following in recent years.

The Georgia-Florida “cocktail party” would be great if Georgia could manage to win one now and then, eh, Capatalist Lion Tamer? Of course we both know how inportant the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is. For my money, this rivalry is the most civil that I know of. Both teams have unusual respect for each other.

Fifty days (or less if you’re into Pro Pre-Season) before kickoff. Any chance this thread gets more interesting now?

I’ve already got tix to 2 of these games, by dint of being a Cal season ticket holder. I am *so *psyched for this season to begin.

Would one of those games occur on 9/1? If so, we can compare notes after the game. That’s one that Tennessee folks will be especially keen on seeing.

It would. I went to Knoxville last year, and had an absolute blast…other than the game itself, of course. Would like to treat our visitors this year to the same hospitality.

Best of luck on that score (both senses of the word) but I’ll be catching the game on the tube. Although I grew up in the Auburn-Alabama hostility environment where you had to be for one and against the other, the UT-Vanderbilt rivalry is weak enough for Tennesseeans to be able to root for both, unless it’s a game between the two. So, even though I prefer Vandy, I can pull for UT whenever they’re playing anybody but Auburn. So, I’ll be rooting for UT but my life will not be in the balance.

I just hope the game is as thrilling as last year’s was. The only other game with that much drama all year long was Auburn-LSU which I just saw again this week on TV. Y’all just be sure and stomp USC!

Oh, but the can. OU finishes the game with a higher score, then sends another walk-on down the local car dealer for a “job”.
