I’ve seen a number of half-M&Ms* where a broken chocolate center got candy coated on all sides. Are you saying yours was a normal-looking shell with half chocolate and half… chocolate vapor?
*Would that be just an M?
I dunno 'bout your M…but some Doper once did a thread about defective candy: he opened a bag of M &M’s,but found that half of them were W’s.
Man, I love this place. 
I got some one time with no Ms at all. They were in a witness protection program, I think.
So there’s a real Mystery.
BTW, my York patties were all there. Well, at least they were before I ate them all. I also ate the Cheetos and the Skittles. It was a snack orgy up in here!
I got a bag once that was about half "W"s.
Some M&Ms hide in Packages of Reeses pieces. The blue ones really stand out. They are stow aways. It makes me happy to get a blue M&M that shouldn’t be there.

The great Peppermint Pattie/M&M/Sugar conspiracy should be investigated as part of the X-Files. My theory is that we have been visited by alien intelligence of the advanced snack food variety. And they have been rescuing their snack food brethren & sisthren slowly, one M/Pattie at a time. If we don’t do something soon they’re going to steal all our snack food and we’ll be left with nothing but lettuce.
