Okay, here’s one I wonder about every so often.
I had a friend in grade school whose last name was different than both of her parents. Her parents had never married, and had different last names from each other. For the sake of example, I’ll say that her dad’s last name was Smith, her mom’s was Jones, and hers was Brown.
Every time I would ask what the deal was with that, she would say, “They picked my first name, and they didn’t like how it went with either one of their names, so they made it up.”
Now, I was 14 the last time I saw her, and at the time, that explanation didn’t make much sense, but I trusted her. I do know as a fact that her parents’ last names were both different from hers. I’m also 90% certain that she isn’t adopted or from one of their previous relationships or anything like that. Then again, I can’t be sure, and I don’t know how to find her now to ask her.
So, my question is, can you do that? Can I give my kid any last name I want to?
I never hate myself in the morning. I sleep till noon.
