Same people who cry about privacy rights, right to privacy, keep your laws off my body have no problem banning legal activities from the private home.
They also hope this will be a model for the rest of the nation.
It’s okay to be bigoted against and hate smokers and create laws to persecute them. Any other group and it would be hateful bigotry, hate speech, hate crimes. But it’s okay to hate smokers and perseecute them. I wish these nannies knew what bigots they are.
There’s a CS Lewis Quote about these control freaks. But fortunately for them smokers are the last group it’s okay to hate.
I don’t want anyone’s laws on my body. But I also don’t want anyone’s cigarette smoke in my body.
If you’ve never shared a wall with a smoker, it’s like being around a bad smell, all the time. All the time. Day after day, year after year, no escape. A bad smell.
Show me a single person who has ever died from this. I want to see it on the death certificate, if you can’t find it, please retract your statement.
Should people be banned from opening their windows at home because automobile exhaust, smog, etc can enter your home? Should people be mandated to have HEPA filters to clean their internal home air which is very unhealthy without smoke?
What’s next? Banning smoking in detached homes if children live there? If that’s teh case, why not allow smoking in bars since children aren’t allowed in bars?
It’s funny you liberals ban smokers from smoking anywhere, then start banning it in the few places remaining because you cry about smelling smoke outside or at home. Of course you’d never allow any accomodations since your goal is social engineering.
Imagine if others got to do this about other behaviors they don’t approve of.
Do gay men NEED to have sex with each other considering the great health risks presented? Do they really need to? Because you nanny staters open the door to banning their behaviors for the “health” reasons.
Why are people allowed to drink outside of the home given the risk it poses to people in the bar, on the roads, etc? Why is someone allowed to work at a bank given the risk of a robbery? At 7-11, etc.. Why single out smokers?
So cooking at home should be banned then. You don’t need to cook to live. YOu can be a vegetarian and eat only raw food. Don’t you dare bbq anything, use a foreman grill, use a frying pan, etc…
Agreed. Do what you want as long as it doesn’t harm others. Your second hand smoke harms others. It’s not a question of a “nanny state”, it’s a question of smokers stomping on the rights of others (I smoke BTW, but I do it in designated areas, I put it out if it’s bothering soneone, and I do not EVER leave butts on the ground - pet peeve of mine).
An oven’s not likely to burn down the building, but it’s not uncommon to have grills on balconies banned, especially if the balconies are wood.
I think the risk of a charcoal grill on a wooden balcony is great enough to ban them.
Cigarette smoke is more unhealthy than other types of smoke. That said, I don’t know if there are studies about the effects of long-distance secondhand smoke. I don’t think it should be banned if it’s just a nuisance.
It’s funny how I live in a unit built in the 1960s and I can’t smell my neighbors smoke. Why is that? Is it the fault of the smokers or the cheap quality place you move into?
I guess in YOUR wisdom, smoking produces rainbows of health and the sound of unicorn laughter, as long we’re wasting time jumping to unsupported claims in a lame effort to put people on the defensive in lieu of dealing with facts.
In any case, I’m curious to see what the effects of this new law will be, and no specific on-point CS Lewis quote comes to mind, either.
In some cities they’re working on ordinances preventing people from smoking in outdoor areas like parks, beaches and other public areas. Pretty soon you might not be able to find a designated area to smoke in. There are some pretty good arguments for not letting people smoke in restaurants, bars, etc., etc., but a law that says you can’t smoke in your own apartment is a bit ridiculous.
See I’m more upset that I can’t smoke in a bar. It seems to me that’s a place you don’t have to go into if you don’t want to but if I live in the appartment next to you I have no choice.
Now I suppose appartments could be designated smoking or non-smoking so tennents know what they were getting inot before singing a lease and I personally would be OK with that as long as it was stated up front.
So are you going to ban wifi and cell phones in apartment buildings too because one day will the found out to be unhealthy? All the electromagnetic radiation? Why are they allowed to have underground parking garages? Do you realize what you are inhaling down there? Yet you cant smoke down there? What’s the bigger risk in a parking garaged, car exhaust or cigarette smoke? Which is banned?
The nanny staters don’t want people smoking, period, but still love the tax revenues it provides though. They ban you from smomking in bars, then whine and run around prancing whining about smelling smoke outdoors. Then they cry that people are smoking in home. They are social engineering. Imagine doing this to any other group, it would be hate crimes/bigotry etc.
Oh this particular city is also banning smoking on public streets too. Basically you have to be rich to be able to smoke in that city..
