I don’t usually listen to it on the radio (unless they play the so-called “classic country”), but have y’all (who DO listen to it and no offense intended) noticed this?
Cannot cite specific songs, but here’s a few examples of “name dropping” I have noticed:
-
Bruce Springsteen
-
Jimmy Buffett
-
“Back In The USSR”
-
“Live From New York, It’s Saturday Night Live!”
Not to mention all the liquors and beers making their way into the lyrics.
Those are just a few I can think of, and I’m not saying that it hasn’t been done in Rock music as well (Charlie Daniels mentioning “Lynyrd Skynyrd” in one of his hits, for example). Just saying that I’m noticing this in a lot of the new country songs these days.
Also, I’m not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, but it does seem kind of gimicky to me.
As far as my preferences: Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis and Lyle Lovett.
Oh, one more thing: Just heard a song about " take you for a ride on my Big Green Tractor".
I think we all know which tractor he means (John Deere, right?), so why not just say the name? It certainly fits the rhythm/rhyme, and it wouldn’t hurt the company any either. Of course I might be making a mountain out of mole hill, too.
Thanks
