The New Kid's Last Day Was Yesterday - He Finds Out Tomorrow

Want to know the honest-to-god truth? I don’t know what, exactly, his discharge was other than “not honorable”. Allegedly, he DID tell the truth about it to the hiring boss. If he did so, and she hired him anyway, then no, he did NOT lie. We are not in an industry where we are compelled to bar convicted felons or dishonorably discharged military personnel.

I’m pretty sure, though, that Boss will NEVER hire anyone ever again unless they have an “honorable” discharge.

Which would be a hell of a lot easier to establish if we, say, punched a time clock but we don’t. We know he was taking extra-long breaks, but not the exact amount of time he was or was not on duty. And frankly, we might have been better off he had simply not shown up, because it wasn’t just not doing stuff that was the problem, he was fucking shit up either through ignorance, epic laziness, or maybe even malice.

This is unrelated to the OP but Broomstick, now that you are employed full time are things working out better for you and your husband? Does this job give you enough income to feel somewhat comfortable?

Anyone who writes “See ID” on their credit card in place of a signature is in violation of their credit card agreement with the issuing company. Any merchant who actually accepts a “See ID” credit card is also in violation of their own credit card agreement with the credit card company. Even worse, if the transaction ends up fraudulent, the merchant is on the hook for the loss and not the credit card company. This past Christmas I can’t tell you how many disclaimers at checkouts I saw stating the various merchants could not accept credit nor debit cards without the required signatures. The disclaimers all had either the official MasterCard or Visa logos.

I can’t begin to tell you how many disclaimers I’ve seen at checkouts that state they won’t accept a card without a photo ID, and never look at the signature on the card.

If MasterCard and Visa expect people to follow their rules, they should start enforcing them.

Yes.

Yes!

(fist pump smiley)

And now you can pick up some of fuckwit’s hours, too!

Don’t be too surprised if you get a call from a lawyer. Drug addiction/substance abuse is now considered a DISABILITY in many states-and you may well be in for an expensive lawsuit.

Good to hear! Congrats!

I’ve heard of this, too, but I think he has to go for help for it first before he can claim being a protected class. Like, if he had gone to his boss and said he needed help with his drug addiction, then he would be very difficult to get rid of.

[hijack] Then there are the fuckwits who won’t sign their card AT ALL, because “Someone can forge my signature if my card is stolen!”. I gave up trying to get them to understand that if their card is stolen, all the thief has to do is sign the customer’s name in their (the thief’s) OWN HANDWRITING in the blank signature panel to go on a spending spree. Most of those folks couldn’t get it, but a few went  .

I’m so glad I don’t work with the public face to face anymore! [/hijack]

He just didn’t have The Right Stuff.

He wasn’t fired for being on drugs, he was fired for gross incompetence.

Supposedly, he’s still got some legal issues with the Marines. I sort of doubt he’ll be starting anything in addition.

And anything like legal action would take a level of proaction and short-term memory and giving-a-shit that I doubt he could muster.

If you’re lucky, your state is an “at will” state and you don’t even need a reason if he’s still in the probationary period. (IANAL, etc.)

If he still has “legal issues” with the USMC, then that can only mean that he’s on Administrative Leave, awaiting a decision on his appeal for a court-martial conviction (thus not actually having been discharged yet) or a decision regarding something along the lines of a fraudulent enlistment.

In other words, he’s your basic run-of-the-mill dirt-bag liar.

Ahem.

Monty, I just want to clarify that I do not know, specifically, what he told the boss prior to hiring. Just because I don’t know X does not mean the Boss does not know X, as she is in no way obligated to discuss details about other employees with me or anyone else other than the co-owner.

Nor am I exactly privy to what the fuck is actually happening with Dipshit - he did say he was appealing/contesting a dishonorable discharge to me, but beyond that I don’t know what the fuck is or isn’t going on with him. The rest is rumors.

So… is he lying, not telling the whole truth (and remember he is in no way obligated to tell anyone the full truth here except perhaps the boss), or fucked up enough to be talking nonsense? I don’t really know. Guess what - I don’t really care much at this point, other than the joy that I don’t have to deal with his bullshit again - except I do, because we’ve had to clean up the mess he left behind. But that project will shortly be completed.

DianaG, please remember he was NOT fired for drug use! He was fired for failing to follow instructions, for undercharging customers/giving unauthorized discounts, for failure to complete required daily duties, and failure to accurately complete required paperwork on a daily basis. We might have added “making inappropriate comments about customers” except the Boss fired him before we could relay that particular complaint.

Oddly enough, none of it involved lying, none of it centered around drug use or disability, and there was never any money missing from the till. So yes, in a sense, he did not lie and he did not steal. However, that does not make him a good man or a good employee, or a competent human being, or one that gives a shit, or is beneficial to our business.
