Since Susan Lucci actually ended up winning that damn Emmy Award a few years ago , we know longer really have in our collective vocabulary the phrase “To Pull a Susan Lucci”.
I am just wondering who currently is ‘up there’ in terms of most nominations but zero wins. It need not just be for the Emmys, but other ‘big’ awards like the Oscars, Tonys, Grammys, Golden Globes, et al.
The two I can think of are:
Angela Lansbury, nominated 17 (!) times for the Emmy but never won.
&
Julia Duffy with 7 Emmy award nominations (and all for “Newheart”!)
I just find it difficult to call either of these ladies the new Susan Lucci because Julia Duffy dropped of the radar screen years ago, and Lansbury has won other ‘big’ awards (she has 4 Tonys).
Anybody know any one else?
A sound mixer named Kevin O’Connell has had sixteen Oscar nominations without a win.
^Poor guy.
The only problem is nobody really has heard of him, thus to say “X pulled a Kevin O’Connell” will just get a blank stare.
Randy Newman lost a boatload of Oscars for which he was nominated, but he finally won, taking him out of the running for this question.
How about Peter O’Toole? Hasn’t he lost a bunch of times at the Academy Awards?
Richard Burton was nominated seven times for an Oscar (once for SUpporting Actor and 6 times for Best Actor). He never won the Oscar.
Martin Scorcese might be the most respected director in America, but he’s 0-for-4 in Best Director Oscars. He’s also been nominated twice (each time with a co-writer) for Best Adapted Screenplay and never won that either. This year was supposed to be his year, but now it looks like he’ll lose out again, to Clint Eastwood.
The problem with Scorcese is that he was overlooked when he was making brilliant movies, and now that he’s making stinky turds like “Gangs of New York” and “The Aviator,” people want him to win because he never won for his truly brilliant work. Too little, too late.
