Hmm, I’m afraid we’re going to get this back and forth now. Why don’t they just say it plainly?
“Yep, the article is incorrect about a charge for used games.”
“We can confirm that the article stating Xbox One will charge fees to play used games is NOT correct.”
“Yes, you can trade in and resell your used games. We’ll have more details soon.”
That’s pretty plainly stated.
Oh, I thought that was another publication, duh, didn’t realize that was the official xbox feed.
So it looks like you need ot be connected ot the internet… just not all the time:
So another rumor posits that:
-
you need to install the game to the hard drive.
-
You can play any game that you have a disc for.
-
If you want to play WITHOUT the disc, you need to register the game.
-
If you try to play a game without the disc, that is not registered to you, you then have to pay a fee before you can play.
Makes sense, but again, just a rumor.
The thing that bothers me is the lack of backwards-compatibility. It’s not like people will only play the old games if they include it.
I guess it’s time to save up, because I’ll be damned if I miss out on Forza 5.
Have they talked about whether people will keep their existing gamer scores after migrating to the Xbox One? I know it’s pretty damn likely that they will, just curious if there’s been any kind of confirmation or mention by anyone official.
Yes, this has been officially said.
“Q: Why require Kinect with every Xbox One?
A: The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you.”
Ugh, God fucking damn it.
As a TV watcher and internet user I’m pretty fired up about the idea. I love the idea of ditching my Tivo/Comcast DVR and using just my Xbox as my only set-top box. Being able to stream my music and video from my PC. And to watch Youtube/Hulu videos on my Xbox. I play games every no and then, but when I do it’s usually a short, casual XBLA game that I’d like to be able to buy once and play on my Xbox, PC, tablet or phone.
Of course half of that stuff I can do for free if I just carry my laptop around with me, but MS seems insistent on charging me to access my own content on Xbox, charging me to access content that I already paid for once, and charging me to access any social features. No doubt they’ll charge me to replace my DVR too, even though I’d probably get one free from my cable company.
If this Xbox works like a PC I’ll be thrilled. If it works like the current Xbox and requires a Xbox Live Gold account to do anything I’ll pass.
It’s going to use Gold just like the 360.
Did they say it, or are you just assuming?
I find it to be utterly idiotic that I can’t use the YouTube app on my 360 without paying $15/mo. Also find it idiotic that I can’t stream my music from my Win8 to 360 without Xbox Music Pass.
Certainly I’d bet that these trends will continue and if they do it will ensure I never buy this thing. I’m not a gamer, I don’t want to pay you for online game play. My laptop does those 2 things above for free, which should I pay to do it on my Xbox?
I so want to buy into the MS ecosystem. I really do. I’d happily buy my music and rent videos from them. But this stupid subscription has been the barrier. Wish the’d learn their lesson.
Am I going to need a Xbox Live Gold membership to play Windows 8 apps on my PC next?
I’m not just assuming, but even if I were, there’s really no way that they wouldn’t do it the way they’ve been doing it all along.

“Q: Will my current Xbox Live Gold membership work with Xbox One or will I have to buy a new one?
A: You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.”
Presumably it’ll do the same thing as it has done since it was first introduced.
Forgot about paying for the Xbox service. That sucks. I’m still holding out hope that Steam will work to gain parity on some of these features, perhaps making the “Steam box” a media center too?
If so, that’ the way I’ll go.
I told you there would be back and forth:
Now they are saying these are “potential scenarios” but that they are not releasing details yet.
Apparently the Xone / X1 / XBone / Xbox 360 2 doesn’t have DVR functionality.
The membership clearly is portable. This isn’t new. However with this device’s aspirations to become the central hub of the living room for the whole family, it seems at odds with this strategy.
This thing will be a lead balloon if they expect 5 family members to pay $50+ each a year just for the privilege of answering Skype calls and listening to their MP3s on the Xbox, let alone watch cable TV.
One would hope that they’d relax this to have a shot at penetrating the home and getting non-gamers into the ecosystem and buying stuff in the store.
This “strategy” is the exact same one they had when they released the 360. I remember watching the introductory video that came with the 360 when it was first released. Gold memberships are a huge cash cow for Microsoft precisely because you have to buy it to get full functionality.
You’re probably right. MS certainly fucked everyone in the ass when they gimped syncing/streaming MP3s between Xbox/Win8/WP8 with Xbox Music as a way to try and leverage Music Pass subscriptions. I suspect they’ll do the same thing here. That said, the soccer moms who spend boatloads on iTunes won’t put up with that shit.
I get paying for online gaming, achievements, social, DLC etc. Gamers are hardcore like that and you can’t really replicate it with a laptop or iPad. YouTube and Netflix and Hulu? That’s a different story, non-gamers aren’t going to pay 2 subscriptions for that.
The Xbox 360 never really penetrated past the gamer crowd into the casual media consumer world. This is no small reason why. Wake up MS, you will be making the same mistake here. Penny wise, pound foolish.
