I have been looking for threads to this show, but there haven’t been any. Am I the only person watching?
I pulled for Guy the whole time. He seemed to have his act together so much more than the others. I couldn’t get into Reggie as a star, but he seemed a very sweet person. Too goofy of a personality for me. Can you say “sassy?”
I liked Nate. Hated the “sofrito” girl. I wasn’t into Carissa much, but that might just be jealousy of her good looks. Plus she never seemed to finish on time.
I loved seeing all the “behind the scenes” stuff with the stars. It seems like a very hard job to be a Food Network Star.
Delores, I’m a Food Network junkie - I only missed one episode of this series - the one where the Iron Chefs were on. I was pulling for Guy too - Reggie got on my nerves.
Yep, I’ve been for Guy all along. Sofrito was just too unprofessional. Carissa is that perfect twit women get snarky about. Andrew was sweet, but no spark. Nathan I liked a lot, and thought he would have been in the final two, but in the end, I think he relied on his boyish charm too much (but God! What a smile!) Reggie just seems…unstable somehow. He just switches on his “sassy sweetie” thing like it’s a mask he wears to get on people’s good side. He seems like there’s an inner Diva Bitch just lurking beneath the surface. (The other two were so forgettable I don’t even remember why I didn’t like them.)
But Guy - what’s not to love? He knows his stuff (well, except for pears) and he’s bringing what I think is really the only original idea to the network. I don’t know why they didn’t like his pitch. His concept (or “food point of view”) seems so clear to me: Gen X and Gen Y folks would rather go out to a restaurant than cook at home. They’re used to “restaurant food”, so let’s show them how to make it at home! I love that idea. All the others had just vague ideas or the same ol’ thing someone else has done and done better.
Looks like we were the silent few against that “Top Chef” program on another network.
I didn’t much care for Nate - he was too Hollywood for my taste. Too buff, too toothy, too perfect.
I was expecting Reggie to get a cease and desist letter from the Fab 5’s attorneys. Between “zhuj”-ing a chicken and generally playing up the campy queen bit, he was coming across to me as yet another one-note gay guy on TV.
From the start, Guy was my “one to watch” as he didn’t have any serious screw-ups and generally nailed it, time after time. Aside from being able to cook, he had no trouble with the business of TV - making the right plugs, hitting marks and bringing it home on time.
My husband and I watched the entire series and enjoyed it.
We started watching because as I was lounging on the couch one weekend (read recovering from St. Patrick’s Day), and watching TV (which just about always means either Food Network or HBO), I was surprised to recognize someone on a preview of an upcoming show. I’d just taken another sommelier course and test, and one of my classmates was a local restaurant owner with spiky blonde hair who my husband and I had met once before. Super fun guy, and all of his restaurants in town are big hits that serve up pretty good food in fun settings. Anyway, since I’d just spent 3 days chatting with the guy, I figured I’d check out the show. We ended up hooked and rooting for him from the get go.
I liked just about all of the contestents, I thought Carissa’s food looked and sounded delicious, and I really enjoyed Evy. But I’ve got a soft spot for sofrito.
I thought for the type of show they were casting (one cook, no audience), that Guy was the best choice. If they were going to have a small audience to interact with or another cook, then I think Reggie would have been okay.
I thought Guy deserved it too. I thought he seemed to be the only one who really projected the air of a professional chef rather than a “personality” who could cook. I thought it was interesting in a way how you could tell just by the way he handled a saute pan or sliced an onion these were actions he had performed thousands of times before and that he barely had to think about it. The cooking itself always seemed effortless for him. The others always seemed like they were “acting” the cooking. Guy had the cooking on auto-pilot which made him look much more confident and professional.
I think you were replying to my post above. I know Top Chef is still on, I really like it. I was referring to the awful “Celebrity Cooking Showdown” which was hosted by Alan Thicke.
I watched every episode. I’m happy to say that Guy broke my lifelong streak of never picking the winner at the beginning of things like this. He looked like the right pick from day one.
Guy won? Yay! I haven’t been able to watch it in a while, too busy with wedding stuff. I like Guy the best, though. HATED Nate. Too cocky. Didn’t much care for Reggie either. He was…disconcerting. Probably because was a young man who had my grandma’s mannerisms. The rest of them were just sorta meh.
