The Next "Star Trek" Series will be a

prequel, set one hundred years before the time of Kirk and Spock, according to the new “TV Guide.” Connecting this series to the original will be the character of T’Pau (the Vulcan High Priestess who called Spock something that sounded like “Spoke” and said “thee” a lot) and who lent her name to a crappy 80s girl-band.

Other characters will be:

Captain Jackson Archer, a “rule-buster” who doesn’t like Vulcans.

Lt. Joe Mayweather, African-American helmsman, vastly more experienced than the captain.

Ensign Hoshi Sato, who can mimic alien sounds

Dr. Phlox, alien “New Age” doc.

Chief Engineer Charlie “Spike” Tucker, a redneck southern boy.

That’s it, it’s mundane to all but Trekkies, and I’ve shared it.

Sir

Okay, I know I’m going to get flamed for this.

How much longer are they going to milk that pathetic cashcow Star Trek? A prequel? A PREQUEL? Aarghh! Like what we’ve had to date wasn’t formulaic enough? A guy that imitates alien sounds! Nonononono…

That’s it. SF is officially dead.

Word around the geek campfire is that this is misinformation.

That’s not to say that series V doesn’t have the capacity to suck mightily. Personally, I think it’s too soon after the demise of theexecrable “Voyager.”

Seems an interesting premise, and I’d give it a watch. However, I’ve been nothing but dissapointed in Star Trek after TNG ended. I have to assume that I’ll feel the same way about this one as I did about Voyager… “Good idea, bad application.”

Still, I’d give it a chance.

Please, tell me that we’ll get to see him repair the warp core with duct tape…

I heard the series is to be based on the “New Frontier”
book series…Capt. MacKenzie Calhoun and company.

Nope, bailing twine!

I say give George Takei(sp?)a Captain Sulu show. Maybe have one of those half white/half black guys on the deck like Frank Gorshin played. Maybe even give James Doohan a part, too.

There’s nothing about that up on the official web page. I’m not going to believe any rumors until I see it there.

My favorite guesses for Series V:

  1. All Klingons, All the Time!
  2. Star Fleet Academy aka Star Trek 90210
  3. Merchants in space
  4. Reality Star Trek: They get fans to go through a grueling audition process for the chance to play extras on Star Trex X (the next movie).

Will he have a pet monkey like the guy in Amazon Women on the Moon?

As far as the OP is concerned, I think that’s a horrible idea for a setting. They would be completely bound up by the pre-history of the Star Trek universe as to what they could and could not do–they couldn’t make ships look any fancier than they were in classic Trek (and let’s be honest–the consoles were plywood and christmas tree lights; the shuttlecraft were oblong boxes). They would have to explain why most of the alien species weren’t around in Star Trek’s time.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!
cough cough

Now that I have got that out of my system…

I am a big Star Trek fan, i started the first season of TNG.
Stuck with it the whole way, stuck with DS9 the whole way (and that was one of the greatest shows, yet stupidass -Rick Berman- had to shove all his attention to “his creation” Voyager and ruined any chance DS9 had… but anyway, i digress) and i then even gave Voyager a chance (it got better with time) and enjoyed all TOS when i could catch it late night.

and that description for series V is the DUMBEST thing i have EVER heard, if that turns out to be anywhere near the truth there will be bloodshed… it will be a good day to die.
It would be just like the obvious problem with the Star Wars prequel… it looks more advanced than the original. Thats jsut dumb. No way around it.

I would say i will pray to the gods for the wellbeing of series V, but i am to busy praying for the movie…

big sigh

I wonder if the Klingons will be the crafty, conniving Kingons of the original series or the more recent bumpy-headed warrior variety.

Well, for good or bad, it seems that the show mentioned in TV Guide is it. According to the page that Ethilrist linked to above, Scott Bakula has been cast as Captain Jonathan (not Jackson) Archer, and there’s a spoiler floating around of the pilot script.

Minor Spoiler:

It basically takes place a few years before the founding of the Federation and concerns the “disastrous first contact” with the Klingons.

As with all Trek shows, it remains to be seen. And, as always, can’t be any worse than Voyager.

Sir Rhosis

That does it, I’m watching it.

Scott Bakula sigh

So the new show will be basically a ripoff of “Galaxy Quest”? If the babe working the radio can wear a bra like Sigourney Weaver, maybe it’ll be worth it. But I admit, I’ve been watching Voyager and DS9 mostly out of sense of responsibility, and a hope that this week’s episode will be one of the good ones. I fully expect this series to blow chunks from Day One.

I like Scott Bakula (and loved Quantum Leap), so I don’t mind his casting at all. I just hope it is not a prequel! They have already created inconsistencies with older established chronology in more recent shows. A prequel would likely shoot it all to hell!

Most here seem to really dislike DS9 and Voyager. I think DS9 started pretty weak, especially the first season. But, I think that the writing got a lot better, and they took time to develop more of the characters, and the relationships between them (like O’Brien and Bashir’s friendship). After that, I really enjoyed DS9.

My major complaint about the end of DS9 is that the final episode, the end of the Dominion war, was just WAYYY too neat, tidy, and convenient. (Okay, the 7 year run is over, and hey, the war ended just in time!) Especially after the episode in which the 3 other misfit genetically engineered geniuses helped Bashir determine that it was “impossible” to win this war – and they supposedly tried every possible scenario???

I love DS9! Though I don’t like Voyager, and I agree with Monstre about the DS9 finale (although I thought the wrapup of the Emissary/Prophets plot was far worse than the end of the war plot).

Actually, I wasn’t too optimistic about the next series, either, since the same people in charge of Voyager are running it, but now that they’ve announced it it’s a little bit exciting anyway.

They’ll probably announce the full details the night Voyager ends.

What is with you people not liking DS9 and Voyager? HEATHENS!!!
TNG, DS9 and Voyager are great shows. TOS is watchable for its cheesiness.
