The Office 12/4 "The Surplus" (spoilers)

After a two week wait, tonight’s episode was pretty good.

The Good: The Jim/Pam stuff was cute, and it was nice to see someone different play a large role (Oscar). Plus, it’s always nice to see Cousin Mos.

The Bad: You could see where Dwight was taking that “marriage” thing from a mile away. Michael, not knowing what surplus was, made it a “semi-retarded Michael” episode.

I was a little confused by Michael’s last talking head, because he said something like, “Make sure you don’t buy a fur coat on credit if you don’t have the money.” But he did take the money, right? That made me really mad; I guess it’s a good sign, though, when the show made me truly angry at him for not giving the money to his employees.

Are there Burlington Coat Factories throughout the entire country? There was one where I grew up, but that was in Philadelphia. If it’s a Pennsylvania (or tri-state area) exclusive, that makes me happy that they threw that reference in there. It’s like seeing the “Turkey Hill” magnet on the refrigerator.

Michael said, “Don’t buy a fur coat with a credit card unless you know you have the money.”

This was one of the better episodes of the season, I think. An office centered A story that was kind of a throwback to the early seasons. I loved Oscar seamlessly segueing to an 6-year-old, then a 5-year-old level in trying to explain a budget surplus to Michael.

I did think the fake/real wedding ceremony was kind of obvious and uncharacteristically cliched, but not necessarily out of character for Dwight.

My favorite line: Creed saying “Look at the balls on you,” when Jim stood up to Pam.

Burlington Coat Factory is a nationwide chain.

I understood it as he ended up buying the chairs, because that’s what they agreed on (I wish they’d shown how). He was mad because he thought he had the money for the coat when he bought it, but then he didn’t, because he used it for chairs instead.

Jim and Oscar were right, by the way. They should have bought the copier.

There are Burlington Coat Factories all over. At least they’re in Va Beach and Nashville, so I’m assuming they’re pretty widespread.

I’ve got to agree, Creed’s line was the best. I couldn’t believe they put that on the air.

I can see Michael not knowing what surplus is.

I wonder how people generally feel about Dwight Vs. Andy. It’s like Pam said; “that’s not fair to Dwight, or Angela… or Andy”. I’ve warmed up on Andy, and the Sprinkles situation was pretty awful.

I loved when Andy stepped in a pile’ indoors.

Didn’t Pam realize that she could’ve easily gotten the new chairs from Michael if she had just shown him her tits?

In the final little bit, Jim got his revenge. “I’m just kidding… I need four.” Bwahaha.

My mild irritation with Pam has turned into full on detesting. I’m hoping they break up them up soon, Jim could do much better.

I loved when Angela kissed Andy!

I’m surprised everyone is neutral or positive towards this episode. I thought it was by far the worst of the season. Everything just went too far, was too exaggerated. Michael suffered from Homer Simpson disease even more than usual. Jim and Pam in conflict came instantly out of nowhere with no build up. I was SURE that they couldn’t be doing a “they are really getting married” thing because this show is too good to do something dumb like that.
Well, to each his own I guess.

The whole Jim and Pam thing was totally in character. It wasn’t really a fight. It was a competition. It actually reminded me a lot of when Jim stole Karen’s chair. So she started squeaking. And then he started singing.

And the only real “Michael Scott is dumb” moment was right at the start. But he’s been known not to be the one to make decisions, especially when people in the office will react badly to it (like the Health Care episode). In fact, him sneakily trying to get the bonus was pretty smart.

Dwight outdid himself with his “clever plan” this time. Hide the ceremony in German… sheesh. But we saw that coming once the minister was there.

I think you’re misunderstanding the nature of their “conflict out of nowhere.” They weren’t fighting. They were in a playful contest. He wasn’t horrified when she got in his face and said he was treading on dangerous ground. He didn’t say “What an unholy bitch!” He didn’t try to pick a real fight with her. There were no hurt feelings. It was serious only insofar as you can take a copier vs chairs battle of wills seriously.

Am I the only one wondered why they didn’t just get a $2000 copier and spend the rest on chairs? I mean, a $150 chair is usually a pretty nice one. And $2000 is going to get you a really nice copier.

I think Michael knew what a surplus was. He just couldn’t quite grasp losing it for next year if he didn’t spend it this year.

Y’know, it’s only been an hour since I watched this, but I have absolutely no memory of this remark or what it concerns. Little help, please, so I can go :smack:?

At the end when Pam won with the new chairs, Jim handed her something to copy saying he needed three copies.

I loved Michael’s rationalization of taking the bonus: “I hate disappointing even one person, and I really hate disappointing everyone. But I really love Burlington Coat Factory. You go in there with $645, and you are truly a king.”

That’s exactly what I was thinking. If their chairs suck that bad, going to Office Depot and getting the leather $150 chairs should be an improvement. My bf bought one for around the same price and it’s really comfortable.

But that would have made it too simple. The writers should have made the bonus less, like $2500 or so, then also upped the % Michael would get if he returned it so he still would have had an attractive option if he took the bonus.

You don’t buy a copier. You lease a copier. You buy chairs.
