I agree that they’re inconsistent about the documentary conceipt. Certainly, they frequently have multiple camera angles but NEVER catch the other cameramen in the shot.
Another moment I loved this episode was Dwight telling Michael he took no pleasure in keeping him out, then smiling at the camera.
Some of the jokes were so over the top they were just silly. The minister saying “Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration” was so painfully stupid it looked like it was lifted from a Full House episode. The old man with dementia going missing and no one being concerned (beyond having Kevin make an announcement before launching into Roxeanne) was just stupid and not even funny. And Michael was such an asshole, and I am a Michael fan. Generally he comes off as spolied but there’s something redeeming – tonight, nothing. The Ryan/Kelly gag was funny, and Karen singing at the end was cute, but beyond that? I was actually going to start a thread about the Office quite possibly having jumped the shark.
I think him cluelessly walking into traffic coupled with Kevin’s announcement should have been enough to tip them off.
I can’t disagree more with some of the sentiments in this thread re tonight’s episode. It was the worst Office episode ever . . . no I really mean it.
As for the Jim and Pam vs. Jim and Karen thing – have some of you fogotten that she rejected him TWICE. I hope he moves on. I would be disappointed to see him with Pam. Beside, Karen is superfly.
Dwight’s explanation of why he stayed to watch “Wedding Crashers” when he was pretty sure, after an hour, that it wasn’t the theater for “Grizzly Man” – “because that’s the thing about bear attacks, you never know when they’re gonna happen” – had me in stitches.
seriously? I thought ti was dumb. Dwight is a geek not retarded.
One of the funniest jokes was a real throwaway.
I paraphrase. . .
Dwight: My family always holds weddings at a grave. Funerals are a blast but weddings can be a very bleak affair.
It doesn’t even make sense, but I liked it.
I thought it was funny, too. Nonsensical, and reaching, but funny.
It reminded me of Pam’s story about renting *28 Days Later * (“zombie” movie) when she meant to rent *28 Days * (Sandra Bullock goes to rehab), and how it was so scary but she kept waiting for Sandra Bullock to show up. Pam’s story was funnier, and I think it was a little weak to repeat the gag.
I disagree. I’m finding Roy much more likeable this season. Early on, they pretty much cast him as an oafish jerk but they’ve been toning that down as the show progresses. There has to be something about him that is likeable otherwise why would Pam be engaged to him for years?
Overall a disappointing episode though. Episodes like this make you wonder if Michael Scott is a full-on sociopath instead of just a narcisistic jerk.
I just assumed Dwight rode to the rescue and brought him back, although I have no basis for that.
Very bizarre that Phyllis would copy so many of Pam’s wedding elements.
I think they’ve gone a long way towards redeeming Roy. He’s still not Mr. Wonderful, but I thought it was hilarious that he thought he would be the only one that would remember what colour flowers he got for Pam. He’ll never be “Jim”, but he’s turning into a decent guy.
Speaking of breaking the fourth wall, did anyone else get the impression that the pungent odor of flatulence had actually emanated from the cameraman?
Anyway, I agree that this episode was a bit weak.
Lowlights: Michael was definitely over the top, and even more pathetic than usual at the end. Pam goes off with Roy.
Highlights: Pavlov’s [del]dog[/del] Dwight, Creed surreptitiously substituting his card on a big gift and casually tossing the other card in the trash.*
*Although, this would never quite work out in the real world. The person who actually gave the gift would not get a thank-you note from Phyllis, and they would surely ask her if she received it. It wouldn’t take much for Phyllis to put two and two together when she realized that the gift in question had a card from Creed on it.
I actually thought that joke was decent, but last week’s episode had one that really made me cringe - when Dwight said “I’m 99% sure that’s not the real Benjamin Franklin, no matter what Jim says” - it took me completely out of the show, because nobody is that fucking stupid. Even grade schoolers know when Ben Franklin was alive. That kind of lame Three’s Company/Friends/million other lazily written sitcoms joke always disappoints me.
Yes. I meant to mention that last week. The worst part of it is that they could have done most of the same jokes with Dwight trying to trip up the fake Ben Franklin anyway because Dwight is dork enough to do that.
We’ve had two stinker episodes in a row. I hope that things get better.
Last season, didn’t Jim convince Dwight that he was receiving faxes from the future or something of that nature? It’s not that out of line that he could have fallen for some sort of Time Travelling Ben Franklin (band name).
I agree Michael was way over the top. The scene where he was jumping outside the window so he could see in: please. Nobody over the age of ten does that.
Best exchange was between Kelly and Pam (paraphrasing):
Kelly: “If I were you’ I’d freak out, get really drunk, and start crying!”
Pam: “Yeah, there’s some good suggestions in there.”
I wish I believed nobody could be like Michael, but we have a guy at work who’s about 85% of the way to Michaeldom already, and he’s only about 25. I imagine he’ll be really horrifying in another 15 years. He’s, well-meaning, but socially inept and prone to embarrassing displays on an epic scale. Thank goodness he’s not on track to ever by anybody’s boss.
Dwight has a thing for pop sci-fi/fantasy and consiparcy stuff (his computer passwords are related to LOTR, when he quized Ryan in his barn he asked him about the Dharma Initative, he thought he had been tapped by the CIA for a covert mission and dumped his cell phone when he thought the mission had been compromised). The “future Dwight” fax thing seemed to be a nod to Heroes. Dwight wants to believe these things could be true, like Jim’s telekinesis (which he tried to debunk but which he also scarily bought). That’s totally different from thinking *Wedding Crashers * was Grizzly Man. Have you seen Wedding Crashers?
Actually in these days of giving gifts straight off the gift registry, it’s not inconceivable that two people would give the same gift.
Re the fourth wall: They definitely aren’t consistent with this. The show where they paired up to do their sales calls was a perfect example. Are we to believe that there are four different camera crews driving around with everyone?
About the episode: I actually really liked it. I agree that Michael was way too over the top and wish they would have pared him down a bit. Just having him be annoyed that he wasn’t the “highlight” of the wedding would have been funny. Even buffoons need to show some character growth.
Pluses: Scrantonicity. Hysterical. Roy acting less like a jerk. Pam looking stricken when Jim was dancing with Karen: Jim looking stricken when Pam walked off with Roy. Ryan knocking the bouquet from Kelly, though I missed this until I read it here and had to see it again. Panning down from Pam and Roy to Dwight and Angela dancing. Toby grinning. Dwight asking Phyllis to supply him with the guest list and photos of the caterers. Michael trying to cover up the bald spot on Phyllis’ forehead. Karen singing with the band. Kelly wearing white with a tiara. Creed switching envelopes on the present.
Negatives: Michael’s “I’m Michael Scott” speech. Michael loudly announcing the bride and groom. In short, Michael.
Didn’t she throw something in there about telling everyone she was pregnant?
