The Office: 7.11/12 "Classy Christmas" (open spoilers)

That difference could bs explained by different kinds of brassieres.

Amy Ryan was showing her acting chops in her confrontation with Michael, rather than just doing the goofy nonsense. She was more like her role in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead than sweet Holly. Me like.

The ep should have been titled “Dwight’s Revenge”, since he managed to get even for years of abuse at the hands of Jim. I, for one, thought he had it coming.

That, and it was great to see Jim lose is cool. I mean, really, how often have we seen him actually lose at something? Apparently he doesn’t take it well.

Years ago, a girlfriend of mine did the same for me, though it was more of a biography than a superhero adventure. I loved it, even if my cartoon-me looked more than a bit like Martha Washington.

i dunno, he seemed pretty meek whenever Roy would challenge him. even in the basketball episode.

it’s been said before: jim’s a bully.

I agree, but to be fair when he was dealing with Roy, Jim basically knew he was in the wrong. So, naturally he’s not going to push it.

I’ve had situations where I have backed down (say, messing around with someone’s girlfriend and him finding out) against someone that I would have had no trouble putting on the ground if it came to it. However, knowing that I was in the wrong meant I was going to try to keep things from escalating.

I just watched the episode again, this time all the way through and without the distractions of making dinner, and you people cheering Jim’s beat-down are sick. Truly! How you could watch him get pummeled and bloodied and humiliated and cheer for the increasingly psychotic Dwight is very disturbing. Yes, he shouldn’t have thrown that first snowball…but Dwight had been ragging on him in a very disturbing manner prior to that…and Dwight’s level of retaliation after a break of several days was way over the top. And then when Jim admitted defeat and surrendered, to insist that Jim hit his wife in the face? That was not even funny. Dwight has gone increasingly towards the dark side since Angela and he broke up and he bought the building. Jim didn’t intend to break the window, and was chastened and crushed after he did, while Dwight feels no remorse for anything. And then to have Holly tell him, while he’s covered in blood, and she hasn’t even asked what went on before, that JIM was totally wrong? Jim has always been a prankster, and Dwight and he have been trading insults and attacks for years, though Jim has been growing up and backing away from that kind of action. Dwight has just turned the corner to totally scary. Jim may not be the hero of the world…he’s just a normal, schlubby guy, but he’s growing up, and it’s fun to watch.

I thought it was interesting Jim thought Dwight was psychotic for suggesting this. Apparently it’s psychotic to do it to Pam, but just a prank when Jim did the exact same thing to Dwight.

Yeah, he intended to his Dwight as hard as possible in the head. Throwing a snowball by hand wouldn’t have hurt enough. Sorry, Jim was a full participant in this ridiculous battle. He just lost.

What was it actually Dwight did?

  1. The snowball fight outside, where he hit snowballs hard at Jim. Seemed harsh, but we must remember that jim accepted the challenge. If you accept a challenge to a snowball fight like that, then own up to it, and dry your eyes.

  2. The box with the snowball on a spring. Was funny, and fully something Jim would do too.

  3. Building a lot of snowmen outside. No snowballs were actually thrown, so that was fair game too.

Let’s face it, if Jim had been “winning” there is about a 99% chance he would have played Prank #2 on Dwight.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but apart from some of Dwight’s persistent nagging about the snowfall, Jim led off with the actual physical unpleasantness. He’s the one that threw a packed snowball into the face of a guy just sitting there doing his job, right?

-Joe

I was expecting Dwight to roll a gigantic snowball off the roof when Jim first stepped outside. Being hit a few (dozen) times seems tame in comparison.

I’m beginning to think no one here has ever actually been in an actual snowball fight before. Taking your opponent to the ground and repeatedly pummeling them with snowballs isn’t a snowball fight.

It is when you agree to have one with someone like Dwight.

I believe the official rules of snowball fighting also frown on the use of a lacrosse stick.

Hard to disagree with that - definitely beyond the point of reasonable. Then again, when you have a guy like Dwight using a word like “challenge” you know it’s going to get out of hand.

Something I can’t remember - did any of the people in charge (Holly, Toby, Gabe, kinda-Michael) ever actually know about the snowball fight? Did Jim get bitched at because it was a “the kid who swings back is the one who gets in trouble because he’s the one the teacher saw doing it” kind of thing?

-Joe

Which was a follow-up to the first transgression. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but context is important.

I think that would’ve been better. I’d rather have seen an escalating war between Dwight and Jim that Dwight just constantly attacking him. Maybe have Jim counter with the spring-loaded snowball, and then Dwight come back with the “dressed as Pam” trick.

Didn’t Jim try and keep failing at escalating?

Interesting in the sense that any sane person would totally agree with that assessment, or interesting in some other way?
