Okay so I just barely started watching the Office, and I want to know which is the best season. Fill me in, please:eek:
That’s what she said.
Now that that’s out of the way, I’m inclined to think that the second and third, maybe also the fourth, seasons are the best. The characters tend to become increasingly caricatured and cartoonish as the show goes on, which adversely affects the more recent seasons. However, I’ve never gone back and re-watched any of the old episodes, so my opinion might be different if I did.
I’d say second, with the best episode being The Injury.
I assume you mean the American version.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, in that order conveniently enough, with a very evident drop in quality just after the 3rd.
Season 1 is the best season for almost all TV shows ever.
But, yeah, Seasons 1-3. I’d watch them in order and watch every season. The later ones aren’t great but they’re still enjoyable.
Season two is by far my favorite with the early episodes of Season 3 also being of high quality.
I am surprised about the love for Season 1. I love it. But, it is marred by episode 1’s awfulness. It was a mistake to start off sticking so close to the British version of the show. The cast also never felt as much like a cohesive unit in the first season. I enjoyed the season. But, I believe the show really hit it’s stride in the second season. The Dundies episode is amazing. They were able to combine awkwardness laughter, and romance without ever skipping a beat. The second season was able to make Michael a tad more likable, without ever making him intelligent or truly relatable.
I love the reruns but struggle to find any laughs in the current season.
You might as well start at the beginning, but the first season is very short and it still finding its feet and establishing the characters. The second and third seasons are probably the best, although I’ve continued to enjoy the show since then. But by the third or fourth season I think you won’t be able to fully appreciate it unless you know about the history of the characters and their relationships, so I wouldn’t start later than season two.
even though (imo) only 3/6 episodes on season 1 were “good episodes”, you might as well just knock those 6 out of the way so you’ll have a solid background for the fantastic season 2.
for the record, my favorite episode of all time is Basketball, followed by Halloween, and Booze Cruise. funny enough, they’re all written by Greg Daniels.
least favorite: Night Out, season… 4?
You want the best seasons? Seasons one and two of the UK version.
Season 2 is one of the single best seasons in sitcom memory, IMO. It has a very strong dramatic story arc based around the characters of Jim and Pam, and expands the roles of the supporting cast. Michael and Dwight are both at their best in this season, as both characters begin to show deeper aspects of their personalities (as established in the first season), but haven’t yet begun the Flanderization that mars their characterizations in later seasons.
The individual episode plots are also better, tending to focus around realistic workplace situations and allowing the humor to come from the characters’ reactions and interactions rather than setting up “gags” in the traditional sense. I prefer humor based on character and delivered with some subtlety, and this season was when “The Office” did this best, by far.
Season 2 is also easily the most consistent season of “The Office” - there isn’t a clunker among the bunch, and every single episode has at least one scene that is a bona-fide “Office” classic (and several are packed with them, “The Injury” among them).
Seasons 1 and 3 are also good, although markedly more uneven than Season 2. Both have some of the best episodes of the show’s run (“The Alliance,” “Traveling Salesmen”), but also have a few episodes that dip into mediocrity or outright badness (the pilot, “Ben Franklin,” “Phyllis’s Wedding”). Season 4 onwards has been mostly mediocre, some bad, occasionally dreadful, and (increasingly) rarely good or great.
Don’t forget the Christmas specials! I think they are the very best.
For the US version, I agree the show peaked in seasons 2 and 3. Things got increasingly ridiculous afterward. Sometimes there are still some good episodes, but the show is not nearly as good as it used to.
