You mean Mitt Romney, who protested in favor of the war in Vietnam while not volunteering to serve (and accepting draft deferment)?
Bush 41, Dole, Kerry. Oh wait, McCain makes four in a row where a combat vet ran and lost against someone who didn’t serve.
The Silver Star vet lost (if you accept the Ohio results) to the AWOL Fortunate Son, too.
But you said last three elections in a row - the last election was Obama vs Romney.
Three in a row, actually four, where there was a vet in the race. I should have been clearer.
You’ve got to recognize that adaher has a tragic condition where he cannot retain information that conflicts with his world view. It’s a more specialized version of that amnesia Guy Pierce had in “Memento.” Maybe adaher can do like Guy Pierce’s character and tattoo some key facts on himself so he can reduce the number of times he makes himself look like a twit.
Some starters:
- There was a Presidential election in 2012. Obama won.
- Mid-term elections historically are piss-poor predictors of the next presidential election.
Anyone else want to help the guy out?
Early returns indicate no. No one does.
Trump was, predictably, POd by McCain’s comments about Trump “stirring up the crazies”. He couldn’t use the really good riposte (“That’s rich coming from the guy who put the Grand High Queen of Crazy on the ticket with him”) because that would offend the crazy GOP voting base, so he had to come up with something else. As for the specific “something else”, he chose poorly.
Predictably, he just can’t stop himself from firing off insults at anyonne who criticizes him, his ideas, his word choice, his hair, etc.
Sooner or later this will sink him. I hope WAY later, because I hope he stays in lobbing grenades at his fellow Repblican candidates.
McCain has his moments, like when he teamed up with Kerry to warm up chilly ties with Viet Nam. I cheered and applauded, it was the exact right thing for the two of them, as a team, to do. So,yes, he has his moments. Trouble is, they are moments.
John McCain was a naval aviator, not infantry (grunt). Also, I think Hawaii became a state in 1959. That was before 1961, right? I’ve been wrong before, though.
Trump will reflexively insult and attack anyone who criticizes or disagrees with him. He’s been doing it for decades. Obviously he does not think too much before he does so. He could have come back at McCain for insulting the Republican base, instead he himself insults all POWs.
I’m not paying much attention, is Trump making any kind of effort to convince voters why he’s right? Or is he just doing his standard, “I’m right about everything, end of story” and seriously expecting everyone to follow him? At least Ross Perot had charts.
It’s only common sense that when you have a president sworn to uphold the nation’s laws who then utterly ignores them to allow immigrants to come flooding into the country unabated, many of them are going to be criminals.
Brain Glutton’s post bears repeating. There is no open border with Mexico, and thought there is illegal immigration, its not for lack of enforcement. In fact, the Pew Research Center reports that illegal Mexican immigrants are declining as a proportion of illegal immigrants. And the ACLU credibly argues that they are not a blight on our society.
This immigration nonsense is boogeyman posturing. Fear attracts voters to a certain type of politician. Well, it attracts a certain kind of voter. And that’s who Trump is courting.
At first, I thought Trump was merely stupid.
Then I began to wonder if his truly world class ego had somehow eaten his brain.
Now I’m starting to wonder if he isn’t secretly in the pay of some Democratic mastermind, splitting the Republican base, spreading chaos amidst the GOP faithful, and doing his damndest to convince everyone that “Republicans are maniacal assholes, don’t vote for one.”
If I could imagine Trump actually working for someone and taking orders in any form, that would currently be my working hypothesis…
Inasmuch as Trump has absolutely no intention of being President of the United States, you cannot view any of his statements in terms of him being a Presidential candidate.
Trump’s entire game is simply to get publicity and notoriety. He’ll dive out the moment it becomes more expensive than what he think the notoriety is worth. Since he’s managed to cost himself more money so far than he expected he’ll probably play along longer than he wanted to now, but it’ll work out for him in the end.
Contrary to Starving Artist’s earnest defense of his weird jab at Mexicans, Donald Trump does not give a rat’s ass about Mexico, illegal immigration, people victimized by crime or any of that nonsense. What he does know is
- He can increase his fame by running for President now and then.
- But he’s done it before, so he needs to up the ante.
- He can up the ante and get the attention he needs by saying especially outrageous things that will anger people.
No examination of Trump that assumes he’s really running for President is going to make any sense, because he isn’t really running for President. Trump’s game is the long con, and he bases his cons on leveraging his name and reputation as a guy who makes money. That’s why his announcement speech has a list of expensive things he owns (in most cases, partially owns, often with borrowed money.) Keeping his name in the news as an Eccentric Rich Guy enhances his ability to run his real estate schemes.
Trust me, he’s laughing all the way to the bank.
Trump’s New Hampshire co-chair is a former *Apprentice *contestant.
I don’t think Trump’s laughing all the way to the bank – yet. He’s lost millions, maybe tens of millions, in all those severed business contracts. I don’t think he expected that.
OTOH. he probably can spinn off half a dozen reality shows from this. Maybe he’s already started shooting the Running For President series.
I think Obama was born in the US. My point is there were millions of Americans who were hearing he might not have been, yet voted overwhelmingly for him over someone who served.
Small nitpick: McCain wasn’t captured by the VC, who operated in South Vietnam and Cambodia. He was shot down over Hanoi by a missile fired by regular forces. Ditched in Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi and was kept in Hoa Lo Prison, nicknamed the Hanoi Hilton and which is now an interesting museum – at least what’s left standing of it is, as they demolished most of it in the 1990s – that has McCain’s flight suit that he was wearing when captured on display.
But yeah, Trump is a dick.
There was no evidence he was born anywhere besides Hawaii, so I don’t see how this is relevant. Would it matter if “millions of Americans” were hearing that he was a space alien lizard in disguise?
